Charlestown, Nevis, September 11, 2025 (NCCU Communications) -- In a poignant moment for members of credit unions in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union Limited and a distinguished son of the soil, Mr Melvin Edwards (CSM), were on Monday June 23 this year inducted into the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) Digital Hall of Fame.
As is the tradition, a ceremony featuring military honours by the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will be held at the National Heroes Park at Conaree. The ceremony begins at 8 a.m. and will feature a short programme that concludes with the laying of wreaths at the base of the four statues featured – The late Right Excellencies Sir Robert Bradshaw, Sir C. A. Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph France, and Sir Simeon Daniel. Recognition and special presentation to the only living National Hero, the Right Excellent and the Right Honourable Dr. Sir Kennedy Simmonds will also take place.
The amendments to the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act include an increase in fines for reckless and dangerous driving from $4,000 to $6,000-$8,000, with repeat offenders facing a fine of up to $20,000. Driving under the influence of alcohol or any substance that alters your judgment now carries a fine of up to $10,000 in the first instance and a fine of up to $20,000 for repeat offences, with longer imprisonment terms. In addition, causing death by dangerous driving now carries a maximum penalty of 10 years, while causing death by careless driving carries a penalty of imprisonment up to six years.
Jamie Herbert (of Newton Ground), the driver of the omnibus involved in the fatal crash with a jeep -which took place on 11th December, was formally charged- thirty (36) days after-by police on 17th January 2025, with five counts of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving and one count of Causing Injury by Wanton Driving.
As it relates to the crime statistics, Deputy Commissioner Henry indicated that reported crimes decreased 11 percent in 2024, when compared to figures recorded in 2023. The statistics for major crimes were down in almost every category. These include homicides which dropped from 31 to 28, a 10 percent reduction. Firearm-related offences saw a 39 percent reduction falling from 31 to 19; malicious damage reduced by 30 percent; bodily harm/woundings fell 11 percent from 161 to 144; larcenies decreased by 12 percent, break-ins were reduced by one percent, while drug possession saw a five percent reduction. There were slight increases in sexual offences up six percent, moving from 68 to 72, while robberies were up eight (8) percent from 39 to 42.
On Friday, 10th January 2025, the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court will mark the commencement of the New Law Year with its traditional Ceremonial Opening proceedings under the theme “Accessibility and Awareness -The ECSC Bridging the Gap Through Community Engagement”. This year, the host Member State is Saint Lucia, where the first scheduled sitting for the Court of Appeal for 2025 will occur.
“For the last four months, we have seen a dramatic decline in shootings and killings – over a 70 percent reduction compared to previous quarters. This could be one of the most significant improvements in the region,” Dr. Drew said. “It is a time to celebrate, especially for our young people, who are choosing life over violence.”
As the attention now shifts to Beyond the 90-Days, Minister of State, the Honourable Isalean Phillip, said that the government through its Citizen Security Secretariat, will continue the whole-of-society approach” that it has championed in addressing crime, and other key policy decisions.
Individuals who have completed their sentences and undergone rehabilitation while incarcerated at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP), will soon experience an easier reintegration into society, thanks to a new programme being developed by the Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.
During the presentation of findings from the 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence, December 4th 2024, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew made a compelling appeal to citizens and leaders alike to approach crime as a societal issue rather than a political one. His remarks underscored the importance of camaraderie and collective responsibility in addressing crime and violence in the Federation.
Launched on September 6, 2024, the campaign aimed to address the root causes of crime using a public health approach and foster holistic, community-driven solutions. The results demonstrate significant progress, including a notable 19% reduction in overall reported crimes and a substantial 66% decrease in firearm-related homicides.
