Charlestown, Nevis, September 11, 2025 (NCCU Communications) -- In a poignant moment for members of credit unions in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union Limited and a distinguished son of the soil, Mr Melvin Edwards (CSM), were on Monday June 23 this year inducted into the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) Digital Hall of Fame.
As is the tradition, a ceremony featuring military honours by the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will be held at the National Heroes Park at Conaree. The ceremony begins at 8 a.m. and will feature a short programme that concludes with the laying of wreaths at the base of the four statues featured – The late Right Excellencies Sir Robert Bradshaw, Sir C. A. Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph France, and Sir Simeon Daniel. Recognition and special presentation to the only living National Hero, the Right Excellent and the Right Honourable Dr. Sir Kennedy Simmonds will also take place.
On Friday, 10th January 2025, the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court will mark the commencement of the New Law Year with its traditional Ceremonial Opening proceedings under the theme “Accessibility and Awareness -The ECSC Bridging the Gap Through Community Engagement”. The five emergency medical transport vehicles are expected to arrive in the Federation in February 2025, according to the Prime Minister and Minister of Health, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew. While speaking at the January 07th edition of the Roundtable, Dr. Drew emphasised that the significant investment made to acquire the fleet of ambulances is entirely justified. This view sharply contrasts with the stance taken by the previous minister of health in the former administration.
“For the last four months, we have seen a dramatic decline in shootings and killings – over a 70 percent reduction compared to previous quarters. This could be one of the most significant improvements in the region,” Dr. Drew said. “It is a time to celebrate, especially for our young people, who are choosing life over violence.”
“Cyber security personnel are needed, and as we see more and more hacking and so forth, we understand how critically important it is,” said Dr. Drew. “We are starting with 100 young people. After that, we want to increase the numbers so that our young people have options, and good options, in terms of the jobs that they will be able to get.”
In 2023, the budget allocation for education was EC $93 million, which increased to $97 million in 2024. For 2025, the allocation has surged to an unprecedented $120 million.
