Charlestown, Nevis, September 11, 2025 (NCCU Communications) -- In a poignant moment for members of credit unions in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union Limited and a distinguished son of the soil, Mr Melvin Edwards (CSM), were on Monday June 23 this year inducted into the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions (CCCU) Digital Hall of Fame.
As is the tradition, a ceremony featuring military honours by the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force will be held at the National Heroes Park at Conaree. The ceremony begins at 8 a.m. and will feature a short programme that concludes with the laying of wreaths at the base of the four statues featured – The late Right Excellencies Sir Robert Bradshaw, Sir C. A. Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph France, and Sir Simeon Daniel. Recognition and special presentation to the only living National Hero, the Right Excellent and the Right Honourable Dr. Sir Kennedy Simmonds will also take place.
The call for solidarity and worker empowerment rang loud and clear on Labour Day, as First Vice President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU), Curtis Francis, delivered a spirited address at the Patsy Allers Playfield in Basseterre following the march organized by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) on Monday 5th May 2025, in observance of International Workers Day.
The ASPIRE Task Force, in partnership with the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis, is pleased to announce the observance of ASPIRE Financial Literacy Day under the theme “Level Up Your Financial Future,” which will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
“Domestic Workers Are Workers Too” was the message boldly displayed on a custom-made back piece presented by the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU) during this year’s Labour Day march held on Monday 5th May 2025 in Basseterre.
Since its inception in January 2025, the BBW initiative has delivered vital financial support to approximately 23,000 households monthly, injecting an average of EC$5.6 million per month into the economy to ensure access to essentials such as groceries and utilities.
“One of the ongoing challenges within society on a whole is overcoming the view that domestic work is ‘lesser’ work. That stigma affects wages, working conditions and how workers are treated. We must change that narrative-this is real, decent and valuable work. Domestic workers are workers too."
Career fields represented at the workshop included mechanics, architecture, law enforcement, nursing, entrepreneurship, religion, fashion design, cosmetology, education, agriculture, sports, psychology, performing arts, hospitality, accounting, law, and information technology.
A significant step in ongoing betterment of labour relations between workers and management was achieved on Monday 31st March 2025, when representatives from the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU), Harowe Servo Ltd., and the Ministry of Employment and Labour signed a new three-year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Former editor of the Labour Spokesman Newspaper, the late Dawud St. Lloyd Byron aka Mudada, will be honoured this Sunday, March 30, when the East Basseterre Labour Branch and the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Dr Geoffrey Hanley, will officially launch the Youth On The Go Community Picnic Square in his memory.
This initiative which aims to enhance the technical expertise of participants, equipping them with the modern techniques and best practices in carpentry and metalwork, is facilitated by experts from the Chamber of Crafts, Flensburg, Germany.
