By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Wednesday 22nd May 2024)-Public Relations Officer of the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order Samande ‘Ras Iya’ Reidrecently emphasized the significance of celebrating the annual African Liberation Day (observed on 25th May) here in St.Kitts and Nevis.

“We would like to bring the indication of really why we celebrate African Liberation Day. It is a standard that has been applied by the thirty-two (32) African countries in 1963 to outline the stand against the colonial movement,” Ras Iya stated during an interview with this media house on Wednesday 22nd May 2024 in promoting the annual week of activities to mark the occasion, from May 19th to 26th under the theme ‘Forging Caribbean African Integration through Trade and Diplomacy.’

He explained that the celebration is rooted in the historical efforts to uplift African people globally and to foster development and social progress.

“This was some of the indication to rise and raise African people to the permanence of being a people in this world and sharing betterment and development and social affairs that incorporate towards human index.”

Ras Iyah elaborated on the historical context of African Liberation Day, noting the importance of the 1963 charter signed by 32 African nations, saying: “So, that’s why we see at this point in time, we should be able to acknowledge the sacrifice of those who promoted the history for African people to be free and be able to see how we can contribute.”

Of note, the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order has been organising the celebrations for over 20 years.

Ras Iya described this year’s theme as highly informative and geared towards fostering community enhancement and integration among African descendants.

“The theme is something that is very informative, that brings us to align with how we can coordinate and bring more community enhancement to all. All people, as Africans here and Africans on the continent.”

He highlighted the importance of forging ties through trade and diplomacy, particularly in the context of Caribbean and African integration. “Now we say forging Caribbean African integration through trade and diplomacy. We know that there are some countries that have been plied from having diplomatic ties with the East, so we are able to enhance that not just by looking at the context of our Caribbean brothers and sisters but the wider section of the Western Hemisphere.”

He envisions a broader scope of cooperation that includes South, Central and North America, aiming for sustainable advancement in various sectors. “So we can be able to have some kind of impact and how we can go in stabilizing and having a betterment for sustainable advancement within both of our capacity as in the region and in the continent.”

“These are some of the initiatives that we would like to see faster and bring into our people, not just here in St. Kitts and Nevis, but as we say the wider part of the West of the Americas, so we can be able to captivate how we can share ideas and build trust to one another as African brothers and sisters.”

Local IT Expert Develops App For Digital Timesheet Payment Processing

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Wednesday 15th May 2024)-In a move towards modernisation, the government’s STEP (Skills Training Empowerment Programme) office in St. Kitts has introduced an online system for the submission of workers’ timesheets by employers for processing weekly payments.

This initiative via an app, developed by local STEP Accountant Clive Nias, who is also an IT (Information Technology) technician, aims to eliminate the need for paper-based submissions, enhance efficiency, improve information records and boost security.

This reporter had an exclusive chit-chat with Nias on Tuesday 14th May 2024 at the STEP office, located on the Bay Road in Basseterre.

“We are currently going digital using the app. It’s more efficient, more effective, and it also allows more security, meaning we give the employers the actual login information and not the employees because we used to have challenges with it in relation to verifying the timesheet submissions,” he noted.

Nias’ information as developer can be found in the app details for the ‘AttendanceSystem’ on the Google Play Store. The system can be accessed via mobile phones and computer devices.

“The system is so easy, so user-friendly. Once you get accustomed to it, it doesn’t take more than two minutes. Just take two minutes out of your day. When you are lying down watching TV, just remember the STEP [timesheet].”

As understood, Nias proposed this digital solution, recognizing the pressing need for a more efficient system, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I put forward the proposal to [management] just when COVID started [in 2020] because, you know, we couldn’t have people back and forth in the office,” Nias explained. “We had to come up with something that allowed us to continue operations without physical interactions. Technology provided that solution.”

According to the IT Technician, the transition to the digital system has been met with mostly positive response.

“The response we have received is more positive than negative. Of course, with anything new, there are those who don’t want to change their ways, but so far so good.”

Asked about the response from the older in age employers, the accountant added, “Majority of them were saying we are not thinking about them but when we show them the system, they said they like it and realize the convenience of using it. At first, they were not into it, but after showing them how it operates, they agree it’s something good we are doing.”

According to Nias, employers were given a one-month notice, and that initially fifteen (15) employers were using the app in April but now almost all employers on the island are using the digital platform.

“We sent out a notice exactly on April 3rd, and we gave a deadline of May 3rd. So we had a month notice,” the accountant said. “Our next step once St. Kitts is fully completed is to go over to Nevis and sensitize the employers on Nevis. I can safely say we have about 90% of employers on St. Kitts using this online attendance system.”

To date, there is a recorded 100 + (meaning over 100) downloads.

One of the significant benefits of the new system is the extended timeframe for submitting timesheets.

“The timesheet with this new digital way, normally we are ask people to submit timesheets on Monday by 4 o’clock to be able to process but now we have up until midnight,” the STEP accountant explained. “We give people more time. Those who finish working late and don’t have the time can now submit when they are relaxing. They have enough time to input the data. So, we start accepting from Friday afternoon. They can submit Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday up to midnight.”

To further enhance user experience, the platform will soon feature push notifications.

“The next step we are going to implement is a push notification to remind persons to submit the timesheet,” Nias said.

Commenting on general the usefulness of technology, he expressed: “Technology is so great but as a society and business community, we need to utilize it more. Everything around us revolves around technology. So, I would say it’s a great thing to have; we just need to use it in more meaningful ways,” Nias remarked.

As gathered, employers interested in transitioning to this more efficient, eco-friendly process are encouraged to register by either reaching out via WhatsApp at 762-8317 or visiting the STEP office.

A Violence-Free Future Needs All Hands on Deck

0

Young men put down yours guns and embrace a future free from crime and violence.

The government’s recent announcement of a gun amnesty program is a step towards this goal. This call, which allows individuals to surrender firearms without fear of prosecution, can be seen as a beacon of hope for those trapped in the cycle of violence. It provides an opportunity for change, a chance for redemption and a path towards a safer St. Kitts and Nevis.

However, the government alone cannot achieve the peaceful society we all desire. It requires an all-hands-on-deck approach. Every sector of society-families, schools, churches, businesses, and community organizations-must come together to support this mission. Our collective efforts can create an environment where young men feel valued, understood, and empowered to choose a different path.

We have already seen significant efforts to spread the message. Ads have been running persistently, and loudspeakers via cars have been traversing our streets, ensuring that the call for peace reaches every corner of our islands. These initiatives are crucial in communicating the urgency and importance of disarming, and they symbolize a community-wide push for change.

The devastating impact of crime and violence cannot be overstated. Families are torn apart, dreams are shattered, and the social fabric of our society is weakened. Moreover, the emotional and psychological toll on individuals, particularly our youth, is profound and lasting. By encouraging young men to put down their guns, we are not only saving lives but also investing in the future of our nation.

Let us support our young men in making the right choices, provide them with the opportunities and guidance they need, and stand together as a united front against violence. The future of our nation depends on the actions we take today.

Together, we can build a peaceful, thriving St. Kitts and Nevis for generations to come.

Workers Union Field Officer Rates Impactful Radio Appearance

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Thursday 16th May 2024)- “Well, what I can say is that the radio appearance exercise went very well because even this afternoon, as I was meeting with a lot of workers, they felt that what we said yesterday was very impactful and that people really need to join the union in these times.”

So said Field Officer of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU) and executive committee member Sean Kelly in giving review after he, alongside General Secretary Precious Mills, participated in a highly engaging ‘Issues’ radio appearance on Freedom FM (106.5) on Wednesday 15th May 2024. with host Maurice ‘EK’ Flanders- a well-known media personality and union advocate.

The Union representatives discussed the critical role of workers being unionised in today’s workplace environment, receiving significant feedback from workers who resonated with the message.

Reflecting on the appearance during an interview with this media house, Kelly emphasized the increasing pressures faced by workers and the necessity of union support.

“Right now, workers are under attack in the workplaces. So every worker right now needs a voice who will help them to stand the tide on their job,” he stated, highlighting the union’s role as a steadfast ally for employees navigating workplace challenges.

Kelly also touched on the recent International Workers Day (Labour Day) march, noting the Union’s success in raising awareness and garnering attention from the community and workers on a whole.

“Well, the march, it was successful on the union’s behalf because we got across to the bystanders and the people, they paid attention to the messages we sent along the route,” he explained.

He went on to say that the Union is already looking forward to making an even bigger impact next year.

“We have made a decision that next year we want a bigger impact. So, therefore, we have started the preparation of putting ideas together of how we could make the march happen. It is going to be much bigger and more impactful for workers.”

In light of the importance of union membership being a central theme of the discussion, Kelly shared insights based on his daily interactions with workers.

“You can see the need for the union in their lives because some people feel that their bosses are not listening to them, they want to take advantage of them, pay them what they feel like, not pay social security, you know, just ill-treat them, put them to do things against what doctors are advising.

He emphasized that many workers recognize the value of having a union to advocate for their rights and interests.

The Union Field Officer is urging workers to view union membership not as a financial burden but as a valuable investment in their future.

“So, they’re saying that they think that workers on a whole should gravitate to the union, and not see the weekly dues of $5.00 as a burden, but see it as an investment into a better workplace,” he noted.

The radio appearance on Freedom FM has evidently struck a chord with the workforce, as indicated by the positive feedback received by Kelly and General Secretary Mills.

According to Mills, the discussion underscored the union’s commitment to advocating for workers’ rights and improving workplace conditions across St. Kitts and Nevis.

She also highlighted that as the union continues its efforts, the organisation remains dedicated to ensuring that every worker has a strong, supportive voice in their corner.

The upcoming initiatives and plans aim to further solidify the union’s presence and impact, ensuring that the message of solidarity and support reaches even more members of the community.

PM Drew Calls For Public Health Approach to Crime

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Wednesday 15th May 2024)- Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Terrance Drew, is echoing his call for a transformative shift in addressing crime and violence by treating it as a public health matter as a holistic approach in the fight against crime and violence.

“Treating crime as a public health issue offers a comprehensive approach that not only addresses the consequences of crime and violence but also focuses on the root causes, ultimately leading to much safer communities.”

Dr. Drew’s remarks were made during his presentation in the wake of the introduction of the Firearms (Amendment) Bill 2024, a piece of legislation aimed at combating gun violence and enhancing national security.

“The Firearms Amendment Bill 2024 forms part of the St. Kitts Labour Party’s administration’s commitment to ensuring that our federation is truly a place where peace abounds,” Dr. Drew explained. “It represents a comprehensive approach to tackling gun violence by addressing key aspects of firearm regulation and enforcement.”

The proposed amendments include provisions to establish a firearms amnesty period, increase penalties for high-level firearm offenses such as importation and possession of automatic weapons, and strengthen penalties for regular firearm offenses.

Dr. Drew emphasized that while increasing penalties is crucial, it must be complemented by other measures to effectively address the root causes of crime.

“Let me make this clear from the outset,” Dr. Drew emphasized. “Increasing penalties for gun-related offenses by itself will never solve any issue with gun violence…but must work in tandem with other measures.”

Drawing from his background in public health advocacy, Dr. Drew highlighted the importance of treating crime and violence as a public health issue. He underscored the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses the underlying factors contributing to crime while promoting community well-being and resilience.

“Treating crime as a public health issue offers a comprehensive approach that not only addresses the consequences of crime and violence but also focuses on the root causes, ultimately leading to much safer communities,” Dr. Drew stated.

The Prime Minister outlined three primary intervention fronts borrowed from public health strategies: disrupting transmission, preventing secondary transmission, and changing societal behaviour norms. He emphasized the importance of engaging credible influencers, rolling out interventions to halt the progression of violence, and championing policy initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of nonviolence.

“This is not just a reaction to anything, but a comprehensive, proactive approach to a matter that has been plaguing us and the region for far too long,” Dr. Drew remarked. “By championing these policy initiatives, we can address the environmental causes that may lead to violence and create a safer and more prosperous future for all.”

According to Drew: “As a society that believes in God, we recognize the inherent value of every human life,” Dr. Drew stated. “Every life is precious, and it is our duty to uphold and cherish it.”

C. F. Bryant College to Boost Recruitment of Women in Non-Traditional Courses

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 18, 2024 (SKNIS): The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) in St. Kitts is poised to step up recruitment initiatives to get more women involved in technical and vocational fields traditionally dominated by men.

The college’s newest project, which was launched on April 09, 2024, offers training to persons in solar photovoltaic and electrical vehicle maintenance and repair, and features one female and fourteen male students.

On the April 18, edition of the radio and television programme InFocus, Fitzroy Wilkin, project lead for the Caribbean Centre of Excellence in Research, Innovation, and Workforce Training project as it is officially dubbed, said he hoped to see more applications from women.

“The only disappointment … was the response from the female gender. I really expected a higher number,” Mr. Wilkin stated, noting that plans are being developed to aggressively attract more women to sign up for the second cohort of the free training.

CFBC President, Andrew Abraham, noted that the educational institution has seen some progress with female enrolment in areas such as carpentry, automotive and electrical. Additionally, CFBC is collaborating with partners to offer training for participants in Phase II of the Women Employment Entrepreneurship and Financial Inclusion Project.

“It is encouraging, and for us as it relates to the renewable energy programme, we are going to be more direct in terms of targeting women to enroll in the programme to begin the process of removing that gender bias, and so we will have more spaces available for women,” President Abraham stated, while encouraging females listening and viewing the programme to apply for technical and vocational courses.

“The [Business] Professional Women is an entity that we are going to be targeting of course,” he added. “We have one of the more active members of that body in Dr. Christine Walwyn, who we will be meeting with shortly to discuss other projects that CFBC can partner with to create additional opportunities for women.”

Mr. Abraham indicated that the non-traditional fields are welcoming to women. He cited the success of Anelda Maynard-Tate, a respected certified professional who taught electrical at CFBC for seven years as a model for women interested in the field.

Innovative Farming Practices to Take Centre Stage at the 29th Annual Agriculture Open Day as the Ministry Advances Sustainable Agriculture

0

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, April 18, 2024 (SKNIS) – This year’s Agriculture Open Day, traditionally a showcase for farmers, fishers, and agro-processors to display their goods, will feature a new addition from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources. The event will introduce innovative practices to the farming and fishing communities, aligning with the ministry’s commitment to sustainable agriculture.

The 29th edition of the popular Agriculture Open Day will be staged from April 25-26, 2024, at the Royal Basseterre Valley National Park along the Kim Collins Highway. This year’s event will be held under the theme, “Securing Our Future Through Sustainable Agriculture by 2025 and Beyond.”

During an appearance on the Wednesday, April 17, 2024, edition of InFocus, Head of Media and Communications at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Marine Resources, Chaira Flanders, stated that the ministry is currently promoting the use of innovative and sustainable agricultural practices across the farming community in St. Kitts. In this regard, designated areas will be provided at the open day venue where seasoned, new and aspiring farmers can learn more about sustainable agriculture.

“We’re going to have our crop and livestock divisions on display and in those various sections we will have our technical staff available and open to answering any of the questions that these persons may have,” Ms. Flanders said.

Moreover, farmers who visit the two-day exhibition next week will be exposed to different innovative methods that can help them transition from traditional to climate-smart farming, given the increased climatic changes being experienced throughout the world.

“We want to ensure that our farmers are [prepared] given that right now we are living in an era where the climate at any given moment can threaten our food security,” Ms. Flanders said, noting that the intention is to equip food producers with the necessary knowledge and expertise to flourish and produce during such circumstances through the implementation and adoption of green technology and improved water conservation methods.

Despite the focus on educational opportunities for farmers and fishers at the open day, organisers are dedicated to maintaining the fun, excitement, and entertainment that the two-day exhibition is famous for.

“This year we are going to have an event that is going to be bigger than last year’s event. We were able to iron out some of the kinks from last year and so we are trying to make as much improvements as possible, so we want you to take advantage of this Agriculture Open Day,” Ms. Flanders said, while mentioning that more than one hundred vendors have registered to offer produce, products and other exciting services to patrons.
