Attorney General Calls for Embracing AI in Justice System at ECSC Lecture: SKN Leading Charge In Western Hemisphere

0

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 18, 2024 (PMO) –While delivering the keynote address at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) Public Education Lecture Series on November 12, Senator the Honorable Garth Wilkin, Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, charted a bold vision for the future of the legal profession, emphasizing the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking under the theme “Justice Without Borders: The Legal Practitioner’s Perspective and the ECSC Reality,” AG Wilkin called for the legal system to evolve by integrating cutting-edge technology to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and fairness.

Hon. Wilkin highlighted the disruptive potential of generative AI in reshaping the legal landscape, likening its impact to the industrial revolutions of the past. “Generative AI represents more than a tool; it is an advanced answer engine capable of processing and synthesizing vast data to support decision-making. AI has the power to streamline legal processes, provide early neutral evaluations, and even assist judges in delivering more consistent and informed rulings.”

The Attorney General outlined specific applications of AI, such as tools to predict case outcomes, assist in sentencing consistency, and provide AI-powered dispute resolution platforms for low-value claims. “Imagine an AI-driven tool in the pockets of every citizen that can provide accessible and accurate preliminary evaluations before stepping into a courtroom,” he suggested. This, he argued, could reduce the caseload of courts and empower individuals, making justice more accessible and equitable.

While championing AI’s capabilities, AG Wilkin acknowledged the challenges and ethical considerations that must accompany its implementation. He emphasized the importance of training AI systems on region-specific data to respect cultural and social contexts. “Justice is not just black and white; it encompasses all the colors of our human experience. AI can complement our efforts, but it cannot replace the nuanced judgment of human jurists,” he asserted.

Wilkin also stressed the need for safeguards to prevent bias, data inaccuracies, and misuse. “Transparent protocols, regular audits, and human oversight are critical to ensuring public trust in AI-driven solutions,” he said.

AG Wilkin also revealed that St. Kitts and Nevis is the first country in the Western Hemisphere to integrate an AI-driven legal assistant. Dubbed ‘Voice It: Your AI Legal Genius’, a tool developed in partnership with Churami Limited, that will provide instant guidance on laws and legal processes, enhancing public understanding and compliance.

“This tool marks a significant leap forward in leveraging technology to empower our citizens and uphold the rule of law,” said Wilkin. “By embracing innovation, we are ensuring that justice remains accessible, efficient, and aligned with the needs of a modern society.”

Good Mental Health Emphasised at Annual Minister’s Youth Forum

0

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 15, 2024 (SKNIS): Positive messages affirming the value of “Good Mental Health” were shared with dozens of young people across St. Kitts who attended the Minister’s Youth Forum held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

Various presenters, including staff from the National Counselling Centre, highlighted key issues that contribute to poor mental health, and coping strategies to overcome the negative effects that can lead to feelings of depression, self-harm, or in some cases physical violence.

Daniella Clarke, a second-year student at the Basseterre High School, appreciated the sessions.

“It was interesting and I learnt a lot of new things,” she said, noting that at times she openly expresses anger. “I learnt ways to control my emotions, my temper, and I am going to stop barking (shouting) after people and I will start ignoring people because I can get easily frustrated.”

Two important recommendations by mental health professionals shared with the students involve finding a safe space and confiding in a trusted source. First Form student at the Washinton Archibald High School Rodney Wilson said it was “wonderful to have professionals coming in to talk to the children.”

Fifteen-year-old Akiloncea Dore of the Cayon High School shared similar sentiments and noted how the key points touched her deeply.

“We really learnt a lot to take back to our peers like youth violence in schools, how youth violence can impact schools, the community and also the country,” she expressed. “Violence is happening in our communities and I think it is really important to educate people about how violence is affecting our country.”

Minister of State responsible for Youth Empowerment, the Honourable Isalean Phillip, said the focu
s on promoting good mental health fits into the broader framework of enhancing citizen security thereby creating healthier, safer and more peaceful communities.

Deputy Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley interacting with youth at the event

“Data is showing us that young people are more aggressive and they are certainly engaging in violent behaviour whether that’s verbal or physical and we want to be able to address that early on and help them to understand their behaviours and emotions so it does not erupt into the most extreme forms of violence,” she stated.

Minister Phillip said that she enjoyed the engagement and applauded the youth for speaking openly and honestly about issues affecting them.

The Minister’s Youth Forum was held as part of the annual commemoration of Youth Month.

Over 360 Young Citizens Already Empowered with $1,000 Seed Accounts Through ASPIRE Program

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 21, 2024 (PMO) – The innovative Aspire program has reached a significant milestone, with 367 young participants already receiving accounts seeded with $1,000 each. Launched by the government of St. Kitts and Nevis, this transformative initiative is equipping children aged 5 to 18 with the financial tools and knowledge needed to secure a brighter future. Designed to instill habits of saving and investing early, Aspire aligns with the government’s efforts to create a more equitable and prosperous society.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, speaking at the November 20th Roundtable, highlighted the program’s potential to disrupt generational cycles of poverty and promote economic independence. “The Aspire program is a game-changer. It empowers our youth to build a financial foundation early, fostering independence and economic resilience. This is not just an investment in individuals but in the future of our nation”, Dr. Drew stated.

Since its launch, Aspire has garnered overwhelming interest, with 1,710 applications received to date. The program is open to all eligible children, regardless of socio-economic background, reflecting the government’s commitment to inclusivity. “This initiative ensures that every child, no matter their family’s circumstances, has an equal opportunity to participate in the financial growth of our nation,” Dr. Drew emphasized. “It is part of our broader strategy to reduce poverty and create generational wealth for all citizens.”

Aspire’s approach goes beyond merely providing financial resources. By fostering financial literacy and encouraging structured investments, the program aims to teach young citizens how to manage money responsibly and grow their wealth over time. The accounts, seeded with $1,000 each, serve as both a savings tool and an introduction to investment opportunities, giving participants real-world experience in wealth management.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of education in ensuring the program’s success. “We are not only seeding accounts but also nurturing minds. Financial literacy is essential for sustainable growth, and we are committed to providing the resources and education necessary to support our youth in their financial journeys,” he noted.

Aspire is a cornerstone of the government’s comprehensive efforts to uplift citizens and strengthen the nation’s economy. Alongside initiatives such as increased minimum wages, pensions for Government Auxiliary Employees (GAE), and the ongoing reform of the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program, Aspire exemplifies the administration’s focus on empowering individuals and fostering economic resilience.

Prime Minister Drew called on families across the Federation to take advantage of this unique opportunity. “This program is for every child in St. Kitts and Nevis,” he said. “It reflects our belief that every young person deserves the chance to dream big and achieve even bigger. Together, we are building a nation where every citizen has the tools and opportunities to thrive.”

Government To Introduce Resolution to Prevent New Landfills Nationwide

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – November 15, 2024 (PMO) – In a decisive move towards environmental sustainability, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, and elected representative for Constituency #8 has expressed his Cabinet’s intention to introduce a resolution preventing the establishment of any new landfills across the Federation.

Prime Minister during an interview on Freedom FM’s ‘Issues’ program, on November 14th, 2024, emphasized the importance of community well-being and environmental stewardship in this decision. “Conaree deserves development, not degradation. Our focus is on modern waste management technologies, including recycling and reducing single-use plastics. We are committed to ensuring no landfill is established in Cayon or any other community,” stated Dr. Drew.

The resolution aligns with the government’s Sustainable Island State agenda, which aims to implement eco-friendly waste management solutions and reduce the environmental footprint of the nation. By preventing the creation of new landfills, the government seeks to encourage the adoption of alternative waste disposal methods that are less harmful to the environment.

This policy shift is part of a broader strategy being adopted by the Drew-led government to enhance environmental conservation efforts. The government plans to invest in advanced waste processing technologies, such as waste-to-energy plants, which can convert waste materials into usable energy, thereby reducing landfill dependency. Additionally, Prime Minister Drew spoke to the government’s existing campaign to promote recycling and the reduction of single-use plastics, aiming to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among citizens.

The decision to halt new landfill developments also reflects the government’s responsiveness to community concerns. Residents of Conaree, Cayon and other areas have expressed apprehension about the environmental and health impacts of landfills. By addressing these concerns, the government demonstrates its dedication to listening to its citizens and prioritizing their well-being.

This initiative is expected to have long-term positive effects on the nation’s environmental health. By reducing reliance on landfills, St. Kitts and Nevis can mitigate issues such as soil contamination, groundwater pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional waste disposal methods. Furthermore, the promotion of recycling and waste reduction can lead to more efficient use of resources and a decrease in environmental degradation.

The introduction of this resolution marks a significant step forward in St. Kitts and Nevis’s journey towards environmental sustainability. By preventing the establishment of new landfills and promoting modern waste management practices, the government is taking proactive measures to protect the environment and ensure a healthier future for its citizens.
