Dawud ‘Mudada’ Byron Picnic Park officially opens in East Basseterre

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, March 31, 2025 (MMS-SKN) — Through the indefatigable efforts of the Area Parliamentary Representative the Hon Dr Geoffrey Hanley and the East Basseterre Labour Branch, a musical, teaching and journalism icon, the late Dawud ‘Mudada’ Byron has been immortalised with the opening of a picnic park in East Basseterre named after him.

The park, which is opposite the Newtown Play Field on the Leonard Dickenson Road, was opened on Sunday March 30, where persons from all walks of life gathered to witness the opening of the park named in honour of Mudada, as he was popularly known, who at the ceremony was referred to by speakers as a champion of the people.

Making remarks at the opening ceremony Dr Hanley, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, said: “This afternoon I am honoured to be a part of this initiative in naming this space in memory of the contributions that Mudada would have made, not only in East Basseterre but on a national level as well.”

The ceremony, which was chaired by a member of the East Basseterre Labour Branch Executive Mrs Emelita Warner-Paul, opened with invocation being rendered by Pastor Deigedra A. Richardson of Covenant Remnant Fellowship Ministries Inc., followed by a detailed biography of Mudada done by former Area Parliamentary Representative and Deputy Prime Minister, Ambassador His Excellency Dr Earl Asim Martin.

Describing what he termed as Mudada’s contribution to East Basseterre, and to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Ambassador Dr Martin informed the gathering that the Late Mudada started his career first as a teacher where taught at the then Newtown Primary School, and the Basseterre High School among others.

While he taught he was also involved in music as a member of the Defence Force Band, but he decided to end that conflict by quitting teaching to concentrate in music where he was the trombonist with the Ellie Matt and GI’s Brass International Band which enabled him to travel to Europe, North America, and the whole Caribbean.

“During that time he was dedicated and involved in political activities, and was an active member of the Black Power in St. Kitts and Nevis,” observed Dr Martin. “When Mudada made a decision that he would move away from music, he became a writer for the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Spokesman, and there he dedicated his time until he transitioned on November 3, 2015.”

He was also an active member of the St. Kitts Nevis Trades and Labour Union, publishers of the Labour Spokesman Newspaper. Present at the function on Sunday was the current editor of the Labour Spokesman Newspaper, Ms Precious Mills, who is also the Secretary General of the St. Kitts Nevis Trades and Labour Union.

Present at the ceremony were members of Mudada’s family who included his daughter Ms Dara Byron and granddaughter Ms Nayilah Bridgewater, and businessman Mr Peter Jenkins who would have interacted with Mudada in all spheres of life especially as it relates to political and economic development of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Area Parliamentary Representative and Deputy Prime Minister who is also the Federal Minister of Education; Youth Empowerment; Social Development, Gender Affairs, Aging and Disabilities; Ecclesiastical & Faith-based Affairs; Housing & Human Settlement, the Hon Dr Geoffrey Hanley, thanked the Youth Arm of the Constituency for their involvement and the Constituency Empowerment for offering a grant to make the park a reality.

“We will continue doing additions here as you realise that there is a permanent barbecue stand that is erected there with the purpose that families can come here on Sundays, or whichever day they decide, and just have their family time here and have the use of the barbecue hut,” said Dr Hanley. “Tomorrow (Monday March 31) we will position the rules of the space, because we want persons to respect the space and keep the space tidy.”

Cutting of the ribbon to declare the park open were Mudada’s daughter Ms Dara Byron, and his granddaughter Ms Nayilah Bridgewater, the Hon Dr Geoffrey Hanley, Ambassador His Excellency Dr Earl Asim Martin, and Early Childhood educator Mrs Sharon Maynard.

Also honoured and presented with a plaque during the ceremony was Mrs Sharon Maynard for 30 years of sterling service to the Newtown Community in the area of Early Childhood Education.

“From our records, this might be the oldest nursery that still is in operation in East Basseterre,” said Dr Hanley. “And it is very fitting, because this is forty years of early childhood development and she would have contributed 30 years. Thank you very much, and it was our pleasure having extended you the courtesy of you cutting the ribbon.”

A Cleaner Future: Embracing the Ban on Single-Use Plastic Bags

At present, one of the promotional materials that the government of St.Kitts and Nevis is using is a poster that reads: “It’s only one plastic bag,” SAID 50,000 PEOPLE.

Change is often met with resistance. It is human nature to feel inconvenienced when accustomed habits are disrupted, even when the change is for the greater good. The government has taken a bold and necessary step by phasing out single-use plastic bags with a ban on the sale and distribution of such, a move aimed at fostering a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. While some may grumble at the adjustment, it is imperative that we, as responsible citizens and residents, understand the long-term benefits and embrace the responsibility entrusted to us.

Single-use plastic bags have been a staple of convenience in our daily lives. From grocery shopping to packaging everyday items, they have been readily available and freely distributed, often with little thought given to their environmental impact. However, the damage they cause is undeniable. These lightweight plastics frequently end up in our oceans, littering our landscapes, clogging drains, and harming marine and wildlife. Unlike organic materials, plastic takes hundreds of years to degrade, meaning every plastic bag used and discarded continues to pose a threat to the environment for generations to come.

The phase-out of single-use plastic bags is not an arbitrary decision; it is a necessary action in the global fight against plastic pollution. Many countries have already taken similar steps, recognizing that small changes in consumer behavior can lead to significant environmental benefits. As an island nation, St. Kitts and Nevis is particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of plastic waste. Our beaches, marine ecosystems, and natural beauty are at stake, and failure to act now would be a disservice to future generations.

Understandably, the transition may come with some initial frustration. Consumers may find it inconvenient to remember to bring reusable bags, and businesses may have to adjust their packaging policies. However, this period of adaptation is temporary, and the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience.

Kudos to everyone who has been working to ensure a smooth transition by promoting the use of alternatives such as cloth bags, paper bags as well as biodegradable options.

Education and awareness are crucial in ensuring the success of this initiative. We must actively shift our mindset from one of convenience to one of responsibility. Instead of viewing this policy as a restriction, we should see it as an opportunity to be proactive in protecting our environment. Every individual action, no matter how small, contributes to a larger impact. By choosing to support the ban, we are not only reducing plastic waste but also setting a precedent for future environmental initiatives.

The onus is also on businesses to lead by example. Many supermarkets and retail stores have already begun encouraging customers to bring their own bags or purchase reusable ones. Restaurants and food vendors can explore sustainable alternatives for takeaway packaging. Government agencies and environmental organizations must continue to educate and where possible incentivize compliance so as to ensure widespread adoption.

For those who are reluctant to change, consider this: Would you prefer to endure the minor inconvenience of carrying a reusable bag or witness our once-pristine beaches littered with plastic waste? Would you rather make a small effort now or leave an environmental crisis for future generations to solve? The answer should be clear.

As citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis, we have a duty to care for our homeland. Environmental stewardship is not just the government’s responsibility-it is a collective one. The phase-out of single-use plastic bags is a necessary step in the right direction, and it is up to each of us to ensure its success.

Let us embrace this change with optimism and commitment, knowing that the small sacrifices we make today will lead to a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for all.

How Many More Road Tragedies Before We Realize?

Another fatal traffic accident has struck. Another life has been lost. Another painful reminder-one that should force us to reflect, but will it?

This time, the victim is an 18-year-old female-her life cut short, her potential unfulfilled, her loved ones left in anguish. Others from that recent accident are in the hospital, battling injuries that may heal physically but will leave emotional scars that last a lifetime.

When a young person dies, society often pauses, if only briefly, to mourn the unfairness of it all. The loss of someone so young is particularly jarring because it reminds us of life’s fragile nature. But beyond the shock and sorrow, beyond the outpouring of grief on social media, do we ever truly learn? Or do we allow the cycle to continue, only to repeat the same conversations when the next tragedy strikes?

We have become a society that is momentarily shaken by these deadly incidents, but too often, the lessons seem to fade as quickly as the funeral wreaths dry up. We engage in speculation-what led to the crash, who was at fault, what could have been done differently. Yet, amidst all the analysis and the whispers, some motorists continue to drive as if they are invincible, as if tragedy is something that happens to others, never to them.

The harsh truth is that no one is immune to the dangers of reckless driving, speeding, distraction or even simple misjudgment on the road. A single moment of carelessness can alter lives forever. A blink, a second, a wrong turn-that is all it takes.

How many more must die before we take heed?

As a nation, we are still mourning those we have lost to road accidents in recent years. Their names should not be forgotten. Their deaths should not be in vain. It is time for all of us-drivers, pedestrians, law enforcement, policymakers-to recognize that road safety is not just an individual responsibility but a collective one.

Drivers, slow down. Be vigilant. Follow the rules of the road. Pedestrians, remain alert and cautious. Authorities enforce the laws without leniency for reckless behavior. And families, teach and remind your loved ones that safety should never be taken for granted.

How many more lives must we mourn before we finally learn?

Let this tragedy not be just another statistic. Let it be a wake-up call.

Let it be the moment we commit to making our roads safer because at the end of the day, the life you save could be your very own.

St. Kitts and Nevis and Nigeria’s GEZ Sign MOU to Launch Regional Agro Hub

Abuja, Nigeria | March 28, 2025 (PMO) — The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Green Economic Zone (GEZ) Special Economic Zone Management Company, based in Abuja, Nigeria.

The MOU sets the foundation for the establishment of a state-of-the-art Agro Hub Warehouse and Logistics Centre in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The agreement was signed earlier today, March 28, by Hon. Samal Duggins, Minister of Agriculture et al, and witnessed by the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew.

This strategic partnership follows a successful engagement at the Afri-Caribbean Investment Summit (AACIS 25), held recently in Abuja, where both parties explored opportunities to deepen trade and economic cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean.

The GEZ Agro Hub Warehouse and Logistics Centre is envisioned as a regional sales and distribution hub, facilitating the flow of agricultural and food products from Nigeria to the wider Caribbean. Products will include staples such as rice, maize, and soybean, as well as value-added goods like dairy products, baby food, snack bars, and non-alcoholic beverages—all sourced and processed through GEZ’s expansive operations in Nigeria.

This collaboration represents a significant step toward strengthening food security, promoting South-South cooperation, and positioning St. Kitts and Nevis as a vital bridge between African producers and Caribbean markets.

It also reinforces the government’s commitment to building sustainable international partnerships, boosting economic resilience, and creating new opportunities for growth and development across the region.

Renovation of New Horizons Rehabilitation Centre Progressing Well

0

Basseterre, Saint Kitts, March 28, 2025 (SKNIS): The major renovation project at the New Horizon Rehabilitation Centre in Harris’ Village is proceeding well as the government works to ensure that the juvenile facility offers a safe, secure and supportive environment for its residents and staff.

Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Social Development, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, joined Minister of State responsible for Social Development and Youth Empowerment, the Honourable Isalean Phillip, for a tour of the facility on Thursday (March 27, 2025). Director of the Public Works Department, George Gilbert, guided the tour and shared critical updates on the ongoing upgrade project.

He noted that multiple contractors were invited to submit bids and were subsequently awarded segments of the extensive work, which includes upgrades to the electrical infrastructure, replacement of ceiling tiles, roof repairs, relocating water storage tanks, and constructing driveways and walkways on the facility grounds. A second phase of the project work will include renovating the Assessment Centre, replacing steel railings, staircases and window grills, as well as replacing all windows in the two-storey building.

“The project is going smoothly,” said Director Gilbert, noting that several contractors have benefitted from the scope of work. He added that most of the major work will be completed before June 2025.

Honourable Phillip expressed pleasure with the progress to date. She noted that ministry officials are currently assessing bid submissions from various contractors to undertake other aspects of the project in a subsequent phase.

“We are in great anticipation that we should be able to move back into this facility within this year, and so we continue to make sure that the works are pushed and progressing as intended,” said Minister of State Phillip. “It’s all looking good. The work is certainly ongoing, and we want to thank all of the contractors who have been here daily doing the work, as well as all of the staff in the Ministry of Social Development and the [Department] of Public Works for making sure that we get things done.”

St. Kitts Department Of Agriculture Establishes Crisis Response Team To Address Invasive Black Bean Bug

0

(MOA Basseterre, St. Kitts, 24 March 2025):

The Department of Agriculture wishes to inform the public that a specialized Crisis Response Team has been established to monitor and control a pest recently reported as a “black bug.” The Department’s Plant Quarantine Unit is actively responding to multiple reports from District 3, which encompasses villages between Old Road and St. Pauls, St. Kitts.

In addressing the situation, Acting Director of the Department of Agriculture, Yushaner, described the department’s swift actions and initial findings. She said, “We had a meeting to implement our contingency plan, and now the task force is out in the different districts to assess what the situation is with this black bug. The next step is to collect samples so that we can send off for identification; however, our preliminary findings told us that it is the Black Bean Bug. Upon coming to the Newton Ground primary being one of the areas of report on the Black bean bug (Brachyplatys subaeneus), and we realize it’s on string beans, which is one of its hosts. It tends to feed on host plants, the stem area where they get sugar for their food.”

Ms. Jeffers also addressed the public’s misunderstanding of the bug, explaining, “When we got here, we also realized that the children are referring to it as the stink bug. However, the stink bug is a different bug to this bug. They referred to it as the stink bug because when it is crushed, it gives off a foul odor, so that’s why they are calling it the stink bug; however, the stink bug is a different bug to this bug.”

Meanwhile, Head of the Quarantine Unit, Kadian Banton, provided additional insight into the extent of the infestation, stating, “We have been getting reports not just in District 3 but also in District 2, and we have heard about one report in District 1, but the heavy infestation seems to be in District 3.”

Recent data suggest that the invasive plant pest is mostly attracted to leguminous plants, particularly peas and beans. Samples have been collected from various farms and schools in the district, where the invasive pest has predominantly been observed gathering in large quantities. The samples will be subjected to comprehensive testing to precisely determine the behaviour of the insect and evaluate the possible threat it presents to local agriculture.

The department’s plan of action includes continuous monitoring, data collection, analysis and treatment to predict the spread and impact of the pest. The results will guide further response measures aimed at providing relief to communities affected, protecting agricultural productivity, and safeguarding food security.

We appreciate the cooperation of the farming community and the public as we work diligently to address this issue. Updates will be shared as new information becomes available.

For further information or to report sightings of the Black bean bug, please contact the Plant Quarantine hotline at 662-3863.

“Today, as you celebrate this very important occasion, I must say that I have had no regrets whatsoever because I believe, just as when I took that decision so many years ago that God was with me, God remains with me today,” said the former Prime Minister.

He added: “I want to, in particular, recognise those who would have been with me from the beginning. Some of them are not here, some of them have gone to the Great Beyond, some of them are now in distant lands, and some of them are at home infirm and unable to be physically present with us this morning, but I know that wherever they are, those who are alive, that is, their hearts must be with us this morning.”

He also thanked his family members who also stood by him, and among those present in church was his sister, Mrs Henrietta Douglas-Christmas, who as part of the King’s 2024 Honours, recently received the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) award for her service in Public Service.

I believe that much has been achieved not only in this constituency, but in the country as a whole.”

The service was led by Assistant Pastor Ms Patrice Bennire, and delivering the message was Bishop Phillip Webbe who also entertained the congregation by rendering two songs, ‘Why die before your time’ as he lamented the many road accidents being experienced in the country, and ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’ as he admonished the youth to take their education seriously.

“Dr Denzil Douglas has served this community and this constituency, Constituency Number Six, for over thirty six years, so we were blessed for him to celebrate with us here at the Church of God of Prophecy in Newton Ground,” said Dr Webbe.

In an post service interview, he observed: “I said to him that he must continue to aspire to inspire before he expires here on earth because God gives us three scores and ten and if by reason of strength maybe they be eighty etc. is because of the goodness of God, but while he is here then he will continue to aspire to inspire – that is aspiration, inspiration, and expiration. So it is my prayer that God gives him good health and strength to carry on the work that he is doing for such a time as this.”

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 27th March 2025) -“Sunday was a very quiet day in the village. I didn’t hear any talking-only on Monday we heard voices. The community of Dieppe Bay is really rocked up by this tragic accident, especially knowing the fact that she was pronounced dead on the scene, not even getting a chance to go to the hospital.”

These were the words of a Dieppe Bay resident speaking to this media house about the recent road tragedy on Saturday 22nd March 2025 that claimed the life of 18-year-old Shanice Harvey, a student of the Saddlers Secondary School while leaving eight (8) others seriously injured.

The heartbreaking news has left the small, close-knit community in mourning, as family members, friends and neighbours struggle to come to terms with the devastating loss of a young life full of promise.

In a social media post, the Saddlers Secondary School shared a heartfelt tribute titled ‘In Loving Memory – Shanique Harvey’ which reads as follows:

The Saddlers Secondary School mourns the passing of yet another beloved student. Shanique Harvey tragically lost her life in a vehicular accident over the weekend, and we are still lost for words at such sad news. As a Wolfpack, we share in the grief with her parents, siblings, and her entire home circle.

Shanique Harvey, affectionately known as Vinnie, was a part of the 2024 graduating class. She was loved by her schoolmates and teachers; her presence brought light to our classrooms and touched the hearts of many within our school community.

We extend our sincerest condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We pray for God’s comfort, healing, and understanding.

The Saddlers Secondary School will always remember the joy she brought into our lives. Rest in peace, Shanique.

A former teacher, Shez Dore-Tyson, has also expressed sorrow saying: “When I think of Shanique, I remember her warm, chubby cheeks smiling shyly when she came to the library. And then my heart drops when I think of the tragedy on Saturday. She was a youth of promise, and I’m really heartbroken to hear of her passing. So very sad indeed. Her passing is a family loss, a school loss, and a community loss. Condolences to her family and community. The nation grieves with you.”

Police on St.Kitts are investigating that traffic accident that occurred between 6 AM and 7 AM in the White Gate area, between Dieppe Bay and St. Paul’s on St. Kitts. Reportedly, the incident left the eight (8) persons seriously injured.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicle, a motor van, was travelling towards Dieppe Bay from the direction of St. Paul’s. The driver lost control and collided with a tree, which caused the vehicle to overturn. Upon arrival on the scene, Police officers observed all the vehicle’s occupants with visible injuries.

The eight (8) persons (including the driver) were transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital, where they were treated and warded.

Harvey was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Crime Scene Unit of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force processed the scene and collected items of evidential value. An investigation into the incident is underway, and updates will be issued to the general public as they become available. The RSCNPF extends sincere condolences to all who have been negatively impacted by this tragic incident.

Meanwhile, in other related news, police have revealed autopsy details in relation to the death of 29-year-old Antwan Mills Elliott of Camps who was killed earlier this month in a traffic accident also.

Reportedly, his death was due to hypovolemic shock, traumatic heart and aortic rupture due to a motor vehicle accident.

On 13th March, Mills Elliott sustained traumatic injuries when his vehicle collided with the Taylor’s Road roundabout on the F.T. Williams Highway before hitting a wall. Reportedly, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
