US Arms Sale Of US$100 Million To Taiwan For Patriot Air Defense Upgrade Welcomed

The decision by The US Department of State to approve the sale of a defensive weapons package worth US$100 million is deeply appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, according to a statement issued by The Presidential Office on 8 February 2022. It marks the second military sale to Taiwan made under the administration of President Joe Biden and the first of 2022, the Presidential Office said, adding that the move underscores US commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances.

According to The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the latest package comprises equipment and services to support participation in the Patriot International Engineering Services Program and Field Surveillance Program for five years. In addition to helping improve Taiwan’s security, the deal is expected to further political stability, military balance and overall progress in the region. Taiwan’s Presidential Office said Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with like-minded partners across the region to ensure peaceful and prosperous development in the Indo-Pacific.
