Premier Brantley Highly Commends Law Enforcement for Significant Reduction in Violent Crime in St. Kitts and Nevis

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (April 08, 2025) – Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Mark Brantley, has publicly commended the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) for what he described as “tremendous progress” in reducing violent crime in the Federation, particularly highlighting a historic first quarter of the year without a single homicide.

Speaking at his monthly press conference on March 31, Premier Brantley said, “I want to go on record to congratulate Superintendent Alonzo Carty and his team in Nevis, and of course our Commissioner of Police James Sutton. We are certainly seeing a reduction in crime and criminality.”

He referenced a recent joint Cabinet meeting of the Federal Government and the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) where Commissioner Sutton made a presentation showcasing significant strides in public safety.

“In that presentation the Commissioner pointed out we’ve had the months of January, February and March without a single homicide, and he pointed out that this is the first time in 23 years that we’ve had the first quarter of the year without a homicide,” Brantley revealed. “But in fact, when you look at the statistics, the last homicide we had was in October last year. So when you look at the period of time it’s been about five months that we’ve not had a homicide. So that has improved and I’m very grateful for that.”

Premier Brantley noted the Federation’s overall performance in tackling major crimes in 2025.

“I think that the areas we were concerned about- homicides, shootings- we’ve had no homicides in the Federation, no non-fatal shootings; so we’ve had no gun-crime in the federation for the year and I think that that is definitely significant. This is really unprecedented; it’s the best results we’ve seen in nearly two and a half decades.”

The Honourable Brantley emphasized the importance of acknowledging the reduction in violence, especially in the context of the turmoil the nation has endured in previous years, referencing the troubling headlines and international advisories of the past.

He noted that the current improvements appear to be the result of the police’s efforts, focused support from the Ministry of National Security, and most importantly, the collective decision by the people that crime was not the direction they wanted the country to continue in.

While he acknowledged there is still work to be done, the Premier celebrated the efforts made thus far.

“I am not going to stand here today and pretend that the battle has been won but I think all of us can admit that there has been tremendous progress in terms of where we were and where we now are… I think our people ought to feel proud and we ought to be committed,” he said. “We are now at a point where we are building a new norm in the country and I think that that is worthy of applause.”

He also extended his appreciation to Permanent Secretary in the Premier’s Ministry Mr. Wakely Daniel, the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) main liaison with the police and security forces. He highlighted that although the NIA has no direct budgetary responsibility for national security, Nevis contributes significantly by allocating hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to support the police and the Defense Force stationed on the island.

The Premier further praised the role of community leaders, churches, schools, and citizens, especially in mentoring the youth.

He acknowledged that while authorities aim to prevent crime, it ultimately stems from individuals. He emphasized the need to reach the hearts and minds of the people, particularly young men, and to encourage them to choose a more positive path.

Since Premier Brantley’s press conference, one stabbing-related homicide has been reported on St. Kitts. Nonetheless, the overall reduction in violent crime remains a major milestone for the Federation.

Zack Gears Up for Bigger, Better Easter Monday Aquatic Sports

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Wednesday 9th April 2025)-Longstanding Event Coordinator, Cultural Preservationist Winston ‘Zack’ Nisbett, in an interview with this media house, expressed great enthusiasm about the anticipated turnout from both the public and the ongoing support from the corporate community in relation to the upcoming 68th Annual Basil Henderson Easter Monday Aquatic Sports.

As shared by him, excitement is building as preparations are in full swing for the event scheduled to take place on Monday 21st April 2025 at the St. Kitts Ferry Terminal.

“Plans are coming big, big, big!” he declared. “There are new people on board, new people are coming on board. People are anxious-they want to participate, and they want to contribute.”

Under the theme ‘Our Culture and Identity Is Essential’, the annual outdoorsy event is slated to kick off at 9:00 AM sharp, featuring familiar favourites such as swimming races, the greasy Ham Pole and Money Pole climbs, boat racing, and a host of cultural activities like limbo dancing and boxing.

This year, Nisbett has added a twist to the iconic greasy pole Ham fetch competition with four hams to be fetched, increasing from the usual two.

“The Ham Pole is the most attractive event. The crowd loves to see the skill it takes to climb it. If you go up without balance, you could hurt yourself-so it’s exciting to watch,” said Nisbett.

While traditionally a male-dominated event, Zack is extending an open invitation to women to participate this year-encouraging them to suit up with proper safety gear.

“I’m appealing to women to go on the pole this time,” he said. “They have to put on their protective wear, but I’d really like to see them involved.”

The event is expected to draw a large crowd, with Nevis participants and supporters confirmed to attend.

Nisbett also praised the corporate response, noting that support has been “overwhelming,” with several local businesses and individuals contributing resources, including medals, tents, and refreshments.

“I spoke to the Coast Guard, the port authority, and I’ve got full authorization,” he confirmed. “Everything is setting up nicely.”

Nisbett, who is also compiling a book chronicling the history of the Aquatic Sports and its impact, hopes this year’s event will generate even more community pride.

“I’m working on a book-2,000 copies,” he shared. “This isn’t a joke. I want to document everything. That book is going to help tell the story of our people and what we’ve done.”

When asked what continues to drive his passion for organizing the annual Easter Monday event, Nisbett didn’t hesitate: “The enthusiasm, the dedication, the application, the will,” he said.

“Nobody’s going to stop me. It gives me momentum, steam, and inspiration. I see down the road.”

Union General Secretary: Domestic Workers Are Workers Too

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Wednesday 9th April 2025)-“One of the ongoing challenges within society on a whole is overcoming the view that domestic work is ‘lesser’ work. That stigma affects wages, working conditions and how workers are treated. We must change that narrative-this is real, decent and valuable work. Domestic workers are workers too.”

So said General Secretary of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU), Precious Mills, on the heels of having recently participated in a WEIGO/IDWF Caribbean Sharing and Exchange Workshop, hosted from Friday 4th April to Sunday 6th April 2025, at the Bransville Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana.

The training workshop was conducted under the coordination of Caribbean Domestic Workers Network (CDWN) International Domestic Workers Federation (IDWF) Caribbean in putting a spotlight on the category of workers who are employed (whether full time or part-time) in private homes in positions such as caregivers and cleaners.

The main workshop facilitator was Pamhidzai Bamu-Chipunza of the Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WEIGO), a Labour Law attorney (who originally hails from Zimbabwe in Africa but currently resides in the US), supported by Chairperson of the CDWN Shirley Pryce and IDWF Regional Coordinator (Caribbean) Angela Clarke.

Mills joined domestic workers, other union representatives and advocates from across the Caribbean to exchange insights, share experiences, and strengthen collective action toward improved protections for domestic workers.

“It was quite an educational and enlightening experience. It was really good to reconnect with some of my colleagues and meet some new ones. One of the most powerful moments for me was hearing directly from the domestic workers themselves.”

She added: “Spaces like these are powerful. They remind us that while our struggles may look different from country to country, the core issues are often the same-recognition, protection, and dignity for domestic workers.”

The workshop underscored ongoing efforts to push for the ratification and implementation of International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention C-189, which establishes decent work standards for domestic workers.

“The fight continues to empower domestic workers globally but as we zoom in on the region, we need collective action to push for the ratification, and where applicable for countries that have already ratified-the implementation of ILO  C-189. The work does not stop at awareness-we need policy. That’s why pushing for the ratification of C-189 is not just symbolic, it’s necessary. But even in the lead up to ratification or even without such, there are minimum  standards of the convention which countries can adopt in seeing to the betterment of domestic workers which is equally critically important.”

Mills emphasized that although some workers feel empowered to advocate for their rights, many remain hesitant.

“The reality is that while these workers do feel empowered in some regards, some are quite fearful about joining a union-which is their right. That fear is rooted in decades of undervaluing domestic work.”

“Domestic work is decent work. Unfortunately, this sector-so vital to the care economy-is often scorned, even by some employers. That’s a sad reality, because to be honest, these workers are key to society. Imagine a nanny or a cleaner helping to keep family households in check-running homes smoothly so others can focus on their own jobs.”

“One of our ongoing challenges is overcoming the perception that domestic work is ‘lesser’ work,” she added. “That stigma affects wages, working conditions, and how workers are treated. We must change that narrative-this is real, decent, and valuable work.”

Since introducing its Domestic Workers Section in October 2022, the SKNT&LU has been steadily mobilizing this segment of workers, including both nationals and migrants.

Mills noted that the union has been making efforts to organize domestic workers.

“We’ve made some strides in St. Kitts and Nevis, but there’s more to do. It’s not just about unionizing-it’s about creating safe spaces for workers to be seen, heard, and protected,” she commented.

The Union has also been engaging in discussions with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to advocate for strengthened protections and legal recognition.

“At this point, our union’s  focus is pushing for the government to ratify and implement Convention C-189.  We do have some legislative coverage-including the Domestic Workers Order 2005- but there needs to be more. When domestic workers are empowered, families thrive, communities are healthier and the economy becomes more inclusive. It’s time we recognize their contributions fully-on paper and in practice,” Mills stated.

Foreign Affairs Minister holds discussions with Chargé d’Affaires at US Embassy Barbados

0

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 7, 2025 (MMS-SKN) — On her first visit to St. Kitts and Nevis, Chargé d’Affaires in the U.S. Mission to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Mrs Karin B. Sullivan, took the opportunity to meet and hold discussions with the Federation’s Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Rt. Hon Dr Denzil L. Douglas, at his Port Zante office.

Mrs Sullivan, who will be serving in the capacity of Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy until the selection of a successor ambassador to his Excellency Roger F. Nyhus (former ambassador), was in the country to attend the 2025 Regional Security System (RSS) Council of Ministers Meeting, whose opening was on Friday April 4.

“St. Kitts and Nevis is in the process of transitioning its economy, continuing since 2004 when we closed the sugar industry, and the United States Government has been a partner in transitioning the economy,” noted the Rt. Hon Dr Douglas, who is also the Minister of International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs; Economic Development and Investment.

In their meeting, held late Friday afternoon at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Port Zante, they discussed the up to US 300 million dollars Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) facility that the United States has made available to the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on November 25, 2024.

“We spoke of how this facility can be accessed for assisting in the transition of our independence on fossil fuel to the new and exciting renewable energy and clean energy, both geothermal and of course solar,” underscored Dr Douglas.

The Chargé d’Affaires was accompanied, at the Port Zante meeting, by Mr Gabriel Knight, Political and Economic Officer, and Commander Steve Hulse, Senior Defence Official/Military Liaison Officer. She had earlier that day attended the closing ceremony of the United States Air Force Southern Command (US SOUTHCOM) Lesser Antilles Medical Assistance Team (LAMAT) 2025 Mission held at the Marriott Resort.

According to the Senior Minister, they also looked at the developing challenges that are expected with regard to the new tariff increases that have been imposed by the United States of America on goods from St. Kitts and Nevis and other countries that are sent to the United States of America.

“Of course we believe that such can have some impact on the cost of living,” observed Dr Douglas. “But what was good is that the Chargé d’Affaires did indicate that the Government of the United States of America, having been the beneficial partner in our trading relationship, that the impact may not be as expected because the Government of the United States was prepared to look at the situation in an on-going way.”

He added that they also discussed the situation that existed several years ago when the relationships between the United States of America and St. Kitts and Nevis was such that the United States had made legislative provisions for the establishment of the Enclave Manufacturing Sector in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Out of that provision, there was the creation of the Industrial Estate where the factories employed thousands of the country’s young people who were assembling electronic parts that were sold into the US market without any tariff because they were from the status of similar factories located in Puerto Rico, one of the offshore islands of the United States of America.

The Foreign Affairs Minister underscored that St. Kitts and Nevis was certain that with the continuing support from the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative that the country will be able to benefit in terms of strengthening its security apparatus, and its security infrastructure, with this important initiative that was launched some twelve years ago in Trinidad and Tobago.

“We believe that this visit was timely, and of course was quite successful,” said the Rt. Hon Dr Douglas. “The matter of the pronouncements of the US Government with regard to the presence of Cuban service providers here, in St. Kitts and Nevis, did not really come up for discussion but we know that this is an on-going political matter.”

He said that St. Kitts and Nevis is “prepared to, as we have said, adhere to all of the international norms, all of the labour laws, national or otherwise, and so that there is no exploitation whatsoever of the Cuban service providers who are here in St. Kitts and Nevis in the area of health care, and in the area of support for our infrastructure especially in the Ministry of Works etc.”
