BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Tuesday 28th August 2018)– After being attacked four years ago, a similar situation happened last night (Monday) when three gunmen ambushed 32-year-old Mikhail ‘Mitch’ Liburd-son of government minister Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd- and fatally shot him.

On Saturday 11th January 2014, he was shot multiple times by two gunmen near his Bird Rock residence as he returned home just after midnight, sending him to the Joseph N. France General Hospital to nurse gunshot wounds.

This media house understands that the then 27-year-old was living with his father who was the Constituency One (East Basseterre) candidate of the opposition Team Unity.

In relation to this week’s deadly shooting, police say that about 10:15 PM Liburd was visiting someone at Pine Gardens. Credible information indicates that his girlfriend lives in that area.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that on arrival, as he was getting out of the vehicle, three armed men came out of the nearby bushes and opened fire on him shooting him multiple times about the body.

Enquiries have also revealed that Liburd ran a short distance then fell. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Technicians from the Crime Scene Unit visited and processed the scene and took items of evidential value into police custody.

This morning Minister Liburd was notably absent from a housing solution program put on by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) held in the community where his son was killed  – Pine Garden located within Constituency Two (Central Basseterre).

Minister of Human Settlement Eugene Hamilton expressed condolences saying: “It is so sad that on a day like today we have to be mourning but our hearts are with you my brother; we understand that you couldn’t be here today…”

Ironically, a few hours earlier that night before the deadly shooting, crime and violence was the topic chosen by Minister Liburd for his  weekly hosted  ‘Straight Talk’ radio programme aired on WINNFM.

“I want to say that crime and violence is a concern. It is a concern in my view and I want us to have a discussion on crime and violence,” he said, in part, during his opening remarks.

Liburd is the minister responsible for Public Infrastructure, Post Urban Development and Transport.

Police are urging persons with information regarding the shooting incident to contact the Violent Crime Unit (VCU) by dialing 467-1887, 467-1888 or 662-3468.

Liburd is the 20th homicide victim for 2018 in St.Kitts-Nevis.
