Injustice For Philo Wallace

A number of strange and unusual things have been happening in St.Kitts and Nevis since Team Unity took up the reins of Government.

But the strangest thing of all to my mind, is happening now and that thing is that the Commissioner of Police is ignoring the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to charge Police Constable Zaviel Jeffers with manslaughter.

Police Constable Jeffers has been identified as the off duty officer who shot and killed 17-year-old Philo Wallace at Enrique’s Bar in Charlestown, Nevis, one night in October 2015.

The 1983 Independence Constitution does not give the Commissioner of Police power of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), so how then can the Commissioner of Police continue to ignore the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions?

How can we expect to deal successfully with the current crime situation? If the Commissioner of Police can ignore the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, can’t he with perfect immunity ignore any advice given to him by Major General Stewart Saunders, our newly-appointed National Security Advisor?

It is surprising our Prime Minister would allow a situation to take place in which Police Constable Jeffers would be permitted to roam the streets of Basseterre without being affected with a criminal offense for having killed young Philo Wallace.

The Police Commissioner is not his own boss. His boss is the Prime Minister who should be asking the Police Commissioner why he has not taken the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions so far on the Philo Wallace matter.

The public is simply asking for justice in the matter. And as they say: Justice must not only be done; Justice must also be seen to be done.
It is time that this matter be brought to a close. It would seem without too much careful study that the Prime Minister is the one to initiate the process to closure of the matter.

O Justice! Thou art fled to Brutish Beasts, And our men have lost their reason!
