BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Sunday 29th January 2023)- Under the theme ‘Our Rich Heritage’, well-known Preservationist Winston ‘Zack’ Nisbett is currently hosting an exhibition at Zack’s Historical-Cultural Library and Museum, located at Buckley’s Estate.
Visiting time is 10am to 8pm “or even beyond that” he informed while sharing details during the interview with this media house on Monday 30th January 2023. The exhibition was officially opened on Friday 27th January and is expected to end on Tuesday 28th February.
It features photographs and reading materials as part of the showcasing to the public. There is no admission cost but “just a small contribution I’m looking for”.As it relates to the theme, Nisbett explained such “contains history.
Those persons who have made an indelible mark on the historical values of our country, our carnival and festivities and the cultural heritage of our country both in pictures and words.” Nisbett added: “The whole idea is to make the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis further afield of a more conscious nature of what we had and the persons who gave us the base or platform to elevate from such as the dances, the music, the clothing; all of this would be highlighted as well as some of the folklore suits like the mock-ajumbie, the bull horns in giving a full synopsis of the whole thing.” In inviting members of the public, the Cultural Preservationist commented: “Y ou have a whole wealth of information , a whole wealth of knowledge and also artifacts that the youths will be intrigued in terms of looking at how it was , the type of equipment that was used on the [sugar] estate…” Lamps, toasters and wafflers were some of the past items he mentioned.
“The main thing is reflection. Our foreparents worked assiduously to bring about a better St. Kitts-Nevis through much sweat and tears they have endured , and it was not easy but it was worth remembering in terms of the discipline – you had to go to Sunday school and the basic things, and this would show them what we went through in order to reach where our foreparents are today.
It gives you the impetus and the scope to recognize that they had to toil and sweat and it is important that we preserve our rich heritage, our cultural heritage; the basics [and also] getting away from the more metropolitan dishes and sticking to the more indigenous things like the sweet potato…” Nisbett stated further about the exhibition. He pointed out that people would be “healthier” if they consumed such food and beverages, noting that the medicinal plant for tea.
“All in all, in this museum, we hope to get questions and to show what it was like then and what it is now, and the psychological impact it has brought forth on the community as a whole,” Nisbett said. Asked if the exhibition is part of Black History Month, he remarked “It encompasses that.
