TAIPEI — US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her congressional delegation touched down on 2 August in Taiwan on a two-day visit aimed at showing support for the country and deepening bilateral cooperation. The group comprises Gregory Meeks, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Mark Takano, chair of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs; Representative Suzan DelBene, vice chair of the House Ways and Means Committee; Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, chair of the House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy; and Representative Andy Kim.
Pelosi, the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, is a staunch supporter of Taiwan who has backed the country publicly on numerous occasions. This is the first time in 25 years for a congressional delegation led by a US House speaker to visit Taiwan — following a trip by Newt Gingrich in 1997 — and further demonstrates rock-solid US support for Taiwan and its 23.5 million people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted: “It’s wheels down for the top-flight congressional delegation led by Speaker Pelosi. Minister Wu welcomed our faithful US friends & wished them a superb visit. Taiwan is not alone!”
