SKN Workers’Union Among Colleagues Show Support For #End Child Labour

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 1st June 2023)- Minister of Labour Marsha Henderson and representative members of the National Tripartite Committee have signed a document pertaining to the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labour in demonstration of St.

Kitts and Nevis’ supportive stance against child labour which speaks to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children as countries around the globe work together in efforts of eliminating the issue in the world of work. The signing ceremony was held on Thursday 1st June 2023 at the office of the Minister of Labour located at the Pelican Mall in Basseterre.

World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL), launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2002, is observed annually on 12th June. Notably, that day’s signing document ceremony saw symbolism of child care having taken place on the occasion of the start of the annual Child Month observance here in the federation.

Affixing their signatures to the document were Minister Henderson along with General Secretary of the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union (SKNT&LU) Precious Mills and President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Michael Davis.

The SKNT&LU, a non-governmental organization, sits as the workers’ representative on the tripartite body. The signed document reads as follows: Acceleration Commitment To end Child Labour in Latin America and The Caribbean We, the Ministers of Labour, employers’ organizations and workers’ organizations, members of the Regional Initiative Latin America and the Caribbean Free of Child Labour, reaffirm our commitment to accelerate actions for the prevention and eradication of child labour, through the implementation of Accelerated Country Action Plans.

We have the strong conviction of achieving the first generation of girls, boys, and adolescents free from child labour in our region. Social Justice for all. #End Child Labour!
