BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Monday 4th December 2023)-Teacher at the Tucker Clarke Primary School (formerly Newtown Primary) Wrennelcia Gumbs is encouraging parents to allow their children to read and be fluent in their speaking by providing the necessary support and guidance to their little ones.
She made the disclosure while speaking exclusively to this media house on Friday 17th November 2023, during the school’s march in observance of its literacy week held under the theme ‘Reading: An Ocean of Possibilities’. Placards displayed included the phrases: ‘A Whale of Possibilities Through Reading’, ‘Reading Makes Us LEARN!’, ‘Open A Book-Open New Ideas There’s More To The Story (made by Jaquan France) and ‘People Come and Go But Book Is Here For life.’ Asked what advice she has for parents and guardians, she urged: ‘In terms of tips: Ensure that you have reading books for your children and your children having devices, make sure that they use them well by having educational games that they could read for example they can visit ABC Mouse which has a lot of reading material and other different things that they can use to read.
Once in a while it’s good to watch television but we need to educate children. Allow them to read and be fluent in their speaking.” As it relates to the march event, Gumbs shared: “We are having our culminating activity; community march for our literacy week 2023 under the theme: ‘Reading: An Ocean of Possibilities so we’re going through town and informing others of the importance of reading and showcasing our talent here.” In touching on this year’s theme, she told: “The importance of the theme is just basically speaks about reading it can be done anywhere and anytime.
