BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 24th April 2020) – As St. Kitts-Nevis rolls out its LED Streetlight and Floodlight Retrofit Project — a $15.6 million initiative funded through a Caribbean Development Bank loan — the old high-pressure sodium and mercury bulbs are being safely removed and shipped overseas for environmentally responsible disposal.
SKELEC Renewable Energy Special Projects Engineer Rondel Phillip explained that the arc tubes from old bulbs contain harmful vapours and will be packed, containerised, and shipped to an overseas facility for crushing and safe gas disposal.
The project, expected to install 10,760 LED lamps across both islands in a one-year phased rollout, will significantly reduce the government’s annual street lighting costs while improving coverage and energy efficiency.
