The Labour Spokesman Editorial
Throughout the all too long seven-and-a-half years of SCHEME UNITY’s tenure as the government of this country, hundreds of our people were subjected to some of the most horrific acts of victimisation, simply because they were supporters of Labour and The Nevis Reformation Party. Occasional appeals were made, publicly and privately, for members of the governing regime to cease and desist from such practices — all to no avail. Indeed, in numerous instances the practice of victimisation of Labour and NRP supporters seemed as if it was some kind of entertainment to members of the regime, their families, friends and supporters. In homes and in public places such as restaurants and bars, there were shouts of joy, clicking of glasses, drinking of toasts, and other forms of merriment whenever it was learned that ‘another one had been sent home.’
Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the public is being treated to endless calls for the new administration to refrain from being vindictive, to act responsibly, and to remember that we are all human beings. Oh, what shameless deceitfulness and hypocrisy! Unlike them, Comrade Prime Minister Drew has been very responsible and merciful. He gave permission for the former fellow to use the Prime Minister’s vehicle for a week after he had lost office. Compare that with the former fellow’s insistence that his predecessor, Comrade Douglas, should be denied duty-free concession on a new motor car, even though that waiver had been approved long before. On several occasions Comrade Drew has appealed to the political appointees of the SCHEME UNITY regime to act honourably and resign their appointments. Most have refused to do so. Without any doubt our new administration has been acting responsibly, exercising a great deal of restraint, and doing its utmost to restore the business of our nation’s government to the realm of responsible behaviour. The ongoing behaviour of many of those now in opposition attests to their hypocritical nature. Indeed, and clearly for all to see and hear, their hypocrisy has now been made manifest.
