I can understand the concern that many SKNLP supporters must be feeling when they see and hear things happening for other people and their own names are not being called. Nothing seems to be happening for them. They were on the frontline. They risked everything. They took on Timothy and his mafia. They were fearless. And now all they want is XYZ and nobody studying them. Nobody answering their phone. Nobody answering their messages.
And that is why I am pleading with all candidates/ministers to have a conversation with EVERY SINGLE foot soldier. Some of the requests of the foot soldiers will take longer than others to get done. But if we try to be upfront and honest, most people will understand because most people are reasonable people. I will never condone taking bread out of one person’s mouth to create employment for another — it wasn’t right when it was done to us and it will not be right if it is done for us. But I understand that there are certain positions that MUST be filled by supporters of the party in power. Therefore, some people WILL HAVE TO BE REASSIGNED. There is no need to avoid people. There is no need to ignore phone calls or messages. Doing so will become a habit and in five years’ time, it will not help the re-election cause.
I must also extend heartiest congratulations to Marcella Liburd on her appointment as our federation’s first female Deputy Governor General. Dr Drew and his cabinet must be commended for making such a bold and historic appointment. Marcella Liburd knows and understands our constitution. She has always been cool and level-headed and I expect her to take that same coolness and level-headedness to Government House. For our fortieth anniversary, we need to WOW the nation. The planning has to begin NOW. The celebrations must be spectacular. They must be memorable. The citizenry must be involved. One thing we are sure of: the greed and racketeering that were the trademarks of the Unity government won’t be a part of this SKNLP government.
