It’s not difficult to understand why none of civil society has publicly reacted to the war of words between the Unity coalition parties. When those who should be responding have their mouths in the trough, rocket science is not needed to figure out why we will probably not hear anything from any one of the NGOs any time soon. So what are we to do? I still believe that it is not our fight and we ought to stay out. We must cast an eye from time to time to see what is happening but, as we have much work to do, our focus has to be on the work to be done.
I feel good when I see the two newest candidates out in their constituencies. Whether the coalition partners resolve or dissolve, the work to be done does not change. Some people feel that everybody’s vote is for sale but that is not so. And even though some sold their vote in 2020 for as little as a $50.00 food voucher, this transactional politics can only happen because too many of us have forgotten the struggles our fore parents endured to gain the right to vote. That is why we of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party have to focus on the task ahead. We have to knock on every single door of every single house in every constituency. It must be as if we are Census enumerators. Everybody must be contacted.
I used to get upset when our young Black men were killing one another but I have to admit that I am even more outraged when 67-year-old men are gunned down by these young Black men. I keep bemoaning the fact that the PEACE programme has done nothing to stop the importation nor the acquisition of illegal firearms. Unless and until there is a concerted and sustained effort to remove every single illegal firearm from the streets and stop the importation of same, none of us is safe. We need new leaders. The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party is not perfect but our track record is there for all to see and judge. The SKNLP is the stabilising force that we need. We need the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party now.
