BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Wednesday 31st March 2021) — Two elderly pedestrians — a male and a female both believed to be in their 60s — were injured in two separate traffic accidents in Basseterre, with one allegedly dragged and another flung by vehicles while crossing the street.
The more recent accident took place on Tuesday 30th March 2021 on Cayon Street, involving a male pedestrian and a young male driver near the junction at Victoria Road and Fort Street, sometime before 11:00 a.m. Eyewitnesses say the man was using the pedestrian crossing when the signal timer was counting down and the traffic light was green for drivers. Police report that the incident occurred when motor SUV PB 4966, driven by Michael Bartlett of Shear Lane, proceeded to turn left onto Cayon Street after the traffic light turned green and struck pedestrian Albert Wyatt of Parson Village, who was crossing from Fort Street towards Victoria Road.
“De man was walking cross. There’s no way the man couldn’t see him because you could either go right or left. He wasn’t watching; he must be was on he phone or something! De light was on but drivers gotta watch what dey doing,” said one eyewitness. Wyatt suffered lacerations to the head and was transported to the J.N.F. General Hospital via the Emergency Medical Service, where he was warded in a stable condition.
Five days prior, on Thursday 25th March, an elderly female pedestrian was struck by a vehicle near Government Headquarters at the intersection of Church and Central Streets at about 7:35 p.m. Eyewitnesses blamed the young male driver for being careless, saying he appeared to use the wrong side of the road. The woman was flung in the air before dropping to the ground. An update on Wednesday 31st March indicated she was recovering well — an X-ray confirmed no broken bones.
