BASSETERRE (Friday 12th February 2021) — Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hazel Laws says science and new information suggest that wearing two face masks simultaneously gives additional protection against new COVID-19 variants. She recommends wearing a surgical mask as the first layer and then a cloth face mask over the top. “With the emergence of these two variants, you may have to wear two masks because these new variants are associated with increased transmissibility — an increased risk of spreading this virus to many other persons,” Dr. Laws said. The UK variant is also associated with an increased risk of death. Good hand hygiene and maintaining physical distance of 3–6 feet remain equally important.
