0

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 05, 2024 (SKNIS): The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis today, Thursday, 05 December 2024, proudly unveiled the winning entry for the Citizen Security Logo Contest during the “Beyond the 90 Days” forum. The event, which presented findings from the 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence From a Public Health Perspective, was hosted by the Citizen Security Secretariat.

Latrelle Warner was announced as the winner of the contest, which attracted 17 entries from 12 talented individuals. His design, titled “Citizen Security: Partnership for Safer Communities – Together, We Can!” will now serve as a symbol of national unity and collaboration against crime and violence.

When reflecting on the inspiration behind his winning design, Mr. Warner explained that his concept was rooted in the idea of ensuring that citizens and residents of the country feel safe. His design embodies an “all hands on deck” approach, symbolising unity and collaboration. Initially hesitant to participate in the competition, Warner was encouraged by his co-workers and friends, which motivated him to create something meaningful and impactful.

Warner, who has a deep passion for graphic design, explained his creative process and the symbolism within his logo.

“I sat down one night and started thinking of how I can integrate the public and the whole national perspective of it. I said in our country you must go through some form of love. That is why you see the elements – the persons incorporated with the hearts to show that we all need to be showing love with and to each other,” he said. “The centrepiece with the flag is from the national standpoint. The wording outside, ‘Citizen Security: Partnership for Communities Together, We Can!’ means everyone in the communities should just play a part. Let us fight this crime together, and we will be successful in the end.”

Warner expressed his desire to inspire the youth.

“I am trying to get youngsters in my community to be engaged in graphic design, videography, and the like. With this logo, I would like to see other people around my age group take part in these initiatives to better themselves, put themselves out there, and let people know what they can do – showcase their skills and talents.”

Mr. Warner will be awarded EC $1,000.00, while the runners-up, Tiffani Browne, who secured second place, and Shamire Allen, who earned third place, will also receive cash prizes.

The winning logo and slogan will be prominently used beyond the 90-Day Campaign, symbolizing citizen security through community engagement and partnerships for a more harmonious St. Kitts and Nevis.

Major Breakthrough: St. Kitts and Nevis Reports 19% Overall Crime Decrease After 90-Day Campaign

0

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 5, 2024 (PMO) — The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, through the Citizen Security Secretariat, today unveiled the findings of its groundbreaking 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence. Launched on September 6, 2024, the campaign aimed to address the root causes of crime using a public health approach and foster holistic, community-driven solutions. The results demonstrate significant progress, including a notable 19% reduction in overall reported crimes and a substantial 66% decrease in firearm-related homicides.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, who is also the minister for National Security, expressed his pride in the collective efforts of communities, law enforcement, and various stakeholders. “These results are not coincidental. They reflect the power of unity and the determination of our people to tackle crime head-on. This campaign is a testament to what we can achieve when every segment of society is involved, working together for a safer and more secure Federation.”

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force provided statistical insights during the presentation, showing that reported crimes declined from 306 in the second quarter of 2024 to 247 in the third quarter—a 19% reduction. Additionally, firearm-related offenses have seen a meaningful drop, with 13 firearms seized so far this year. Notably, firearm-related homicides decreased dramatically, with the campaign period witnessing three such incidents compared to an average of three per month prior to the initiative.

“This is a 66% reduction in firearm-related homicides—significantly outside the margin of error in statistical terms,” the Prime Minister highlighted. “This proves that society’s collective action can yield real results.”

The campaign’s success was attributed to a combination of measures, including community consultations, youth-focused programs, enhanced collaboration with faith-based and non-profit organizations, and targeted interventions like the Elevate program. The initiative also prioritized mental health support, educational outreach, and rehabilitation programs within the prison system to address the root causes of crime.

Prime Minister Drew further emphasized the need for sustainability. “We must move beyond short-term responses and establish sustained, evidence-based approaches to ensure long-term safety and security”.

Task Force Coordinator Ms. Eartha Carey commended the active participation of communities, noting that consultations provided invaluable insights into the lived experiences of citizens. “The findings from this campaign are not just data; they are the voices of our people, illuminating the challenges and aspirations of our communities,” she said.

The 90-Day Campaign has not only improved public safety but also positioned St. Kitts and Nevis as a regional leader in addressing crime from a public health perspective. The Federation, according to the Prime Minister, plans to present its strategies and results at the upcoming Third CARICOM Symposium on Crime, sharing its innovative approach with regional counterparts.

Prime Minister Dr. Drew Lauds Success of the 90-day Campaign Against Crime and Violence; Calls for the Continued Holistic Approach to the Problem

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 05, 2024 (SKNIS) – Prime Minister, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, has lauded the Citizen Security Secretariat for its successful execution of the all-inclusive 90-Day Campaign Against Crime and Violence from a Public Health Perspective that has yielded significant insights into the root causes of crime and identified comprehensive measures to address the issue.

The Secretariat presented the results of the 90-Day Campaign to the wider population during a live event today, Thursday, December 05, 2024, at the Solid Waste Management Corporation conference room. During that event, stakeholders provided a comprehensive review of the campaign’s achievements, data-driven insights gathered from the various community engagement activities, and outlined actionable plans to reduce crime and violence across St. Kitts and Nevis going forward.

Prime Minister Dr. Drew, in his presentation, said there have been many previous attempts at addressing the national issue of crime and violence. He noted that what was lacking, however, was the comprehensive approach that could derive data-driven preventative measures.

From the onset, the government adopted an all-of-society approach as part of its broad response to crime and violence, crossing all political and societal lines in the process. As a result, all political parties in the Federation, youth organisations, law enforcement, academic institutions, faith-based organisations, and the sporting community were invited to the table to work together, share their concerns and present ideas and recommendations.

Throughout the life of the 90-Day Campaign, a significant reduction in crime and violence was realised in St. Kitts and Nevis. Prime Minister Drew indicated that this reduction was not by accident, rather, “It was because you, the community, decided you would come together to deal with the matter, and so the community is responsible for the results.”

It was in this vein that Prime Minister Drew reiterated his stance that crime and violence are not just issues for law enforcement, but rather they are public health concerns that affect the entire community, and by addressing these issues holistically, St. Kitts and Nevis can create that safe society that every citizen and resident desires.

“At the end of the day all of us want to live, work and flourish in a safer St. Kitts and Nevis, and so we have to make our approaches comprehensive, and universal, but they must be evidence-based as well so that we can resolve a lot of the issues with crime and violence,”Dr. Drew said.

Cost-of-living Task Force Sets Bold Agenda to Combat Economic Pressures in 2025

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 05, 2024 (SKNIS): The Cost-of-Living Task Force met today, Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Government Headquarters to outline a comprehensive strategy to reduce economic challenges influenced by recent geopolitical tensions and financial uncertainty.

Established in 2023, the Task Force has been at the forefront of tackling this global challenge by identifying practical, data-driven strategies to enhance affordability and build economic resilience. Throughout its first year, the group engaged in rigorous discussions and developed actionable recommendations to mitigate the impact of inflation and external shocks.

At today’s meeting, the Task Force focused on its work plan for 2025, which includes stabilising costs in critical areas such as food, water, and energy. The group will also enhance its engagement with stakeholders through ad-hoc groups and technical consultations, ensuring a wide array of expertise informs its work.

The Chair of the Task Force, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Marcus L. Natta, highlighted the shared responsibility of tackling this challenge.

“The rising cost-of-living is not solely a St Kitts and Nevis issue. It is a global issue that requires a collective response. While the government is committed to implementing strategies to protect households and businesses, we call on all stakeholders – individuals, communities, and the private sector – to play their part by adopting practices that promote efficiency, sustainability, and resilience,” said Dr. Natta. “Together, we can navigate these challenges and create a better quality of life for all citizens of St Kitts and Nevis.”

Dr. Natta further noted the government’s use of innovative approaches, such as forming ad-hoc groups to address specific challenges. These groups will include stakeholders from worker’s unions, private businesses, NGOs, and other specialised fields to bring targeted solutions to pressing issues.

The Cost-of-Living Task Force is made up of a multi-sectoral team to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to addressing the economic challenges faced by citizens and residents. It includes the Cabinet Secretary as Chair, the Head of the Civil Service, and representatives from key ministries such as Finance, Sustainable Development, Employment and Labour, Social Development, International Trade, Agriculture, Public Infrastructure, Energy, and Utilities, and Economic Development. Additionally, the task force benefits from the expertise of a Private Sector Representative from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, as well as a representative from the Nevis Island Administration. This diverse team underscores the government’s commitment to tackling cost-of-living issues through collaboration and strategic planning.

According to Dr. Natta, with a clear roadmap for 2025, the Cost-of-Living Task Force remains a cornerstone of the government’s mission to ensure economic stability and sustainability for all.

The Creative Economy-A Pillar of National Vibrancy For Sugar Mas Festivity

0

As we bask in the festive atmosphere leading up to the official opening of Sugar Mas 53, it is impossible to ignore the vibrancy, creativity, and cultural richness that define this season.

Our twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, renowned for its lively traditions, transforms into a kaleidoscope of music, art and celebration at carnival time. The creative economy, exemplified during this period, is not only a reflection of our identity but also a powerful driver of social and economic development.

Each year, music stands at the heart of our Sugar Mas festivities. From pulsating soca beats that make you jump and wave to thought-provoking calypso narratives that tackle politics, social issues, and the humor of daily life, the artistic expressions of our people shine brightly. These genres of music are not just entertainment; they are vehicles of cultural storytelling and social commentary.

Calypso, in particular, continues to be a cornerstone of Sugar Mas, providing a platform for artistes to delve into the issues of the day, often blending satire with profound insights. These songs challenge us to think critically about our society, while also offering moments of humor and light-heartedness. On the other hand, soca infuses the season with energy and excitement, encouraging revelers to dance, celebrate and unite. Together, these art forms create a balance of reflection and celebration, embodying the spirit of carnival.

The work of our musicians, producers, and performers underscores the importance of nurturing the creative economy. These artists pour their hearts and souls into their craft, often inspired by the dynamic environment of carnival. Their music does more than entertain; it fosters community, inspires pride, and contributes significantly to the economy through performances, recordings, and events.

Kudos must be given to the National Carnival Committee for its role in enhancing the creative landscape of Sugar Mas. This year, the timely deadline for the Road March competition has prompted a surge of participation from artists and bands. By setting clear parameters, the committee has not only encouraged creativity but has also ensured that fans and music lovers can fully engage with the festivities early-on! Initiatives like this help sustain a competitive and vibrant creative economy, fostering innovation and ensuring quality in the cultural output.

Beyond Carnival, the creative economy holds vast potential for St. Kitts and Nevis. It is an industry that encompasses music, art, fashion, film, and more. With strategic investment and support, it can become a significant contributor to national development. From job creation to cultural tourism, the creative economy has the power to diversify our economy and elevate our global profile.

Sugar Mas is a shining example of what can be achieved when creativity and community intersect. The energy, color, and joy of this season remind us of the immense talent and potential within our people. As we gyrate to the rhythms of soca or reflect on the poignant messages of calypso, let us also remember to value and support the creative forces that make these experiences possible.

Investing in the creative economy is an investment in our identity, our future, and our ability to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Let Sugar Mas 53 inspire us to celebrate and champion the creative spirit of St. Kitts and Nevis, not just during Carnival, but every day of the year.

PM Drew Raises Questions About CBI-Martinez Vetting

0

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 28th November 2024)-“How is it the Harris administration did not know that? Why was our country exposed?”

On the topic of the convicted fraudulent background of French investor Phillipe Martinez, such a line of questioning has been made by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr. Terrance Drew, in relation to the vetting process of the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme and its association with Martinez under the past government.

His sentiments were made when quizzed by a local reporter during his monthly The Round Table session held on Wednesday 20th November 2024.

PM Drew addressed concerns about Martinez’s inclusion in the program, allegations of misconduct, and the handling of the program under the previous administration.

He outlined the timeline of Phillipe Martinez’s association with the CBI programme, noting that his involvement existed before the present administration.

“When we met Mr. Martinez, when we got into office, it was already part of the CBI programme,” Dr. Drew stated. “Mr. Martinez, with MSR, was admitted to the programme in May of 2022. You’ll be fully aware that I was not the Prime Minister, and that it was another Prime Minister who admitted Mr. Martinez into our CBI programme.”

PM Drew highlighted that the government assumed due diligence processes were carried out before Martinez’s admission. However, subsequent checks revealed serious issues.

“When we did our other due diligence, we discovered a checkered past for the MSR gentleman,” Dr. Drew said. “A checkered past that showed from our information that he was convicted for fraud. He was sentenced to five years in prison, according to our report, and he spent time in the United States and Europe.”

He questioned why the previous administration had not uncovered this information during its vetting process.

“…you would know that based on our standards in St. Kitts and Nevis, if a man or woman commits any type of offense, fraud, which is significant, he or she is bad from certain jobs. And in our CBI programme, when this is discovered, this is grounds to take serious action. The question becomes, and it’s perplexing. How is it the Harris administration did not know that? Why was our country exposed?”

He disclosed that Martinez later approached the government with a financial demand to resolve the matter.

“One of the things that was said to me and to the government was that if we wanted this to go away, we needed to pay $40 to $100 million US dollars,” Dr. Drew revealed.

He expressed outrage at the request, emphasizing its potential financial implications.

“How can a man enter my office saying…that I have to pay $40 to $100 million out of the government’s treasury to settle this case that a fraudster has brought forward, who should not have been in the first place?”…$100 million U.S. dollars, that is approaching a quarter of our annual budget.”

PM Drew emphasized his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the CBI program, distancing themselves from Martinez and taking steps to strengthen oversight.

“I will never risk the integrity of our country or the PM’s office or the CBI programme with such a character,” he asserted.

Additionally, he outlined measures introduced under his administration to address issues within the programme.

“We are the only country that has made underselling a criminal offense. If you do that, you will have a record that reflects that you were involved in fraudulent activities,” he said.

PM Drew questioned the vetting process under the previous administration, asking, “Had he gone through the process, he would not have entered the program. How did we accept this man with this severely tied criminal record to be entered into our CBI programme?”

Dr. Drew also raised concerns about misinformation and alleged attempts to manipulate public perception.

“This gentleman has paid surrogates within the media, podcasts, all over, [and] does not care about the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. As is obvious, he is about himself and what he perceives he can get because the question becomes, if you care about St. Kitts and Nevis, why are you attempting to extort tens of millions of US dollars from the people of St. Kitts and Nevis through the treasury? Why? Is the question.”

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“I will not allow a fraudster to drag my name…Any accusation that this administration has been complicit in wrongdoing is not just false; it’s absurd.”

Dr. Drew underscored the importance of the CBI programme to the national budget, noting that it contributes significantly to infrastructure, utilities, and social programs.

“The programme had become the mainstay of our current budget, meaning that 60 to 70 percent of what we pay for came from the CBI programme,” he explained.

He reiterated his administration’s stance on protecting the integrity of the programme.

“We will not be improperly pressured by questionable actors, wherever they might be,” he said. “The people of St. Kitts and Nevis deserve a CBI programme that operates transparently and in their best interests.”
