‘Spiderman’ Granted French Citizenship After Rescuing Child From Paris Balcony

Paris (CNN)A young Malian migrant who rescued a child dangling from a balcony will be made a French citizen and has been offered a job by the Paris fire brigade, the office of the French presidency said.

Video of the rescue showed 22-year-old Mamoudou Gassama climbing up four floors of the apartment building in just seconds to rescue the child, to cheers from onlookers.
By the time Parisian emergency services arrived at the building, he had already pulled the child to safety.
President Emmanuel Macron invited Gassama to the Élysée Palace on Monday, where he was given a certificate and a gold medal for performing an act of courage and dedication.
Gassama told Macron: “I didn’t think about it, I climbed up and God helped me.”
He said that when he reached the apartment, he became scared and started shaking.
Macron asked Gassama how the child was when he was rescued. He replied: “He was crying because he was hurt.”
Speaking to CNN-affiliate BFM TV after the rescue, Gassama said he had been in the neighborhood to watch a football match in a local restaurant when he saw the commotion.
“I like children, I would have hated to see him getting hurt in front of me. I ran and I looked for solutions to save him and thank God I scaled the front of the building to the balcony,” he said.
Mamoudou Gassama was watching a football game when he realized the child was in danger.

The video shows neighbors on an adjoining balcony struggling to pull the child to safety. According to judicial sources, the child’s father was out shopping when the incident occurred.
The father is being investigated for abandoning his parental responsibilities, according to a spokesman for the Paris prosecutor.
He is no longer in custody, but will be sentenced in September, the spokesman said. The 4-year-old child has been placed in care.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said on her official Twitter on Sunday she had called Gassama to thank him, congratulating the Malian migrant on his act of bravery.
“He explained to me that he arrived from Mali a few months ago with the dream of making a life for himself here. I replied that his heroic act is an example for all citizens and that the city of Paris will obviously be keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France,” she posted to Twitter.
The Paris fire brigade tweeted: “Mamoudou shares the values of the Paris fire brigade. We are ready to welcome him.”

First Female PM and New Attorney General Sworn into Office in Barbados

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday May 25, 2018 – Hours after her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) created history by becoming the first political party to secure a clean sweep of the seats up for grabs in elections, party leader Mia Mottley marked her name in the history books as well, as she was sworn in as the island’s first female Prime Minister.

The 52-year-old took the oath of office before Governor General Dame Sandra Mason at Government House just after noon today.

Queen’s Counsel Dale Marshall was also sworn in as Attorney General.

The swearing-in came about nine hours after Mottley’s predecessor, Freundel Stuart, conceded that his Democratic Labour Party (DLP) had been defeated at yesterday’s polls.

Mottley, Barbados’ eighth prime minister is expected to name the rest of her Cabinet over the weekend.

Speaking to the reports after the ceremony, Mottley said her immediate order of business would include dealing with critical issues such as the South Coast Sewerage Project; the lack of public transportation; the absence of regular garbage collection; the payment of the foreign debt which is due this month; and stabilizing the foreign reserves.

She disclosed that she had already spoken to the leadership of the Social Partnership and indicated that she wished to meet with them on Monday, so they could set a framework by which to go forward.

“I will want to meet twice monthly, particularly during this period of getting these mission critical issues right, with the leadership of the Social Partnership because above all else, Barbados needs consensus to move forward. Barbados needs to be talked through the difficult decisions so that everyone can play their part. My mantra has been many hands make light work and it shall continue to be that way,” she stressed.

The Prime Minister said that over the course of the next week, she hoped to put in place a financial discovery team so they could get a clearer picture as to the true state of Government’s finances and the necessary decisions could be made.

In addition, she promised that Government would regularly communicate with citizens, at least twice monthly in the first instance and thereafter, as required.

“There will be a Press Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office and a Press Secretary to Cabinet. We recognize that in the absence, particularly, of an official Opposition, we have an even greater duty to keep the public of Barbados informed at all times and I intend to ensure that that is done,” Mottley assured.

The Prime Minister said Government had urgent business to attend to and she would therefore like the ceremonial opening of Parliament done within the next two weeks, at the very latest.

She added that there were a number of areas that would engage the attention of the Attorney General, including dealing with the backlog of court cases; reforming the criminal justice system; and establishing a commercial court and a family court that has hybrid jurisdiction.

The Prime Minister also noted that the public would have an opportunity to comment on some of the controversial pieces of legislation, namely the Police Act and the Road Traffic Act, and, where necessary, sections would be repealed.

Historic Clean Sweep in Barbados Election

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday May 25, 2018 – Eight years to the day that Kamla Persad-Bissessar led her United National Congress to an election victory and became Trinidad and Tobago’s first female prime minister, Mia Mottley followed suit, but in more convincing fashion.

Mottley’s Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won a clean sweep of the 30 seats up for grabs in yesterday’s election, becoming the first party in Barbados ever to do so and putting the 52-year-old veteran politician in the history books as the country’s first female leader.

The results had been slow in coming in from a day of voting that had featured reports of some people not being able to find their names on the voters’ list – which led to an emergency hearing before the Chief Justice who ordered that 18 names added; complaints of poor direction at polling stations; and long lines at polling stations which resulted in some people leaving without casting their ballots.

Counting did not begin in most constituencies until well after 10 p.m. last night, and results trickled in in the early hours of Friday from the vote in which a record 132 candidates contested the polls.

But even before the counting was over, former prime minister Freundel Stuart conceded defeat.

Delivering her victory speech before a crowd at the BLP’s headquarters, where she headed after trouncing her rivals in the St Michael East riding – she got 4,553 votes compared to the 500 for the Democratic Labour Party’s Patrick Todd, 133 won by first-timer Kemar Stuart of Solutions Barbados, and 37 votes mustered by Barbados Free Party member Enlou Frere – Mottley said the win by the former opposition party was “the people of Barbados’ victory”.

She told the jubilant crowd that now is not the time for gloating, but a time for healing and for all to join forces to help rebuild the country.

“There should be no time for gloating. We are all one people. We are Barbadians. We will need many hands to help make light work. We will rebuild Barbados together,” Mottley said. “We have to get to the task immediately.”

The prime minister in waiting also addressed the issue of the absence of an opposition which resulted from the BLP’s whitewash of the former ruling party.

“I am deeply conscious that with the absence of an official Opposition in the House of Assembly we will have to evolve institutional arrangements to be able to allow Barbadians to have a greater say in the governance of this country. All ideas must contend before government takes a decision,” she promised.

“There is no way that there will be a mistrust of the absolute mandate that you have given us the people of the BLP. We will be your servants at all times.”

Mottley also reiterated her campaign promises and assured that her government would work to ensure Barbadians had more disposal income.

“We will give you a commitment that within the next few months that will be business number one for us,” she said, later indicating that she intended to select her Cabinet before next Monday.

During her speech, the BLP leader announced that all schools would be closed today and that she had encouraged businesses, except supermarkets and banks, to close at 1 p.m.

The BLP’s 30-nil victory came just over two months after a similar clean sweep in Grenada, where the New National Party of Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell won all 15 seats in Parliament.

Q. C. JUICY AND FAMALAAYYY!!!

By:FAIR SHARE FOR ALL

Since Team Unity gained power on 16th February, 2015, my beloved federation has never been the same.

If my constitution was not strong, if my heart was weak, I would have taken sick a long, long time ago from the constant bombardment of embarrassment and stress meted out to us by this gang of hooligans and ne’er-do-wells parading as our government.
But we were warned.

Dr. Douglas beseeched and preached. Even Timothy’s own family cautioned the membership of PLP that he was a bad man.

But so bent were these people on getting out Douglas and Labour that they ignored all the warning signs and Timothy, just like a scorpion, did not disappoint.

Imagine, not a year in power and he was accused taking bribes already.

Accused taking cash bribes is unforgiveable but watches and shoes?

Heaven help us!

Even the most corrupt leaders the world over are laughing after our leader. And laughing after us too.

What must they be thinking?

This is so humiliating.

They must think that Western civilisation has just reached our shores so we are just getting accustomed to clothes. They must think that we still tell time by the sun hence the need for the leader to be asking for a watch.

But if they know about the other scandals, they will not be surprised.

If they know about the EC/US$16million dollars scandal, they will not be surprised.

If they know about the Stem Cell Scandal, the Herpes Scandal, the Ren Baio Scandal, just to name a few, they will never be surprised.

Just as Labour supporters are not surprised.

Just embarrassed. And angry.

BUT NOT SURPRISED AT ALL!

And that this scandal has broken not only vindicates Dr. Douglas, but is so demeaning that PAM people are humiliated into silence.

All who thought that Dr. Douglas was trying to hold on to power to prevent Timothy from assuming what was rightfully his should now understand.

Dr. Douglas was trying to save us from this traumatic experience that we are suffering through and trying to make sense of right now.

Dr. Douglas was trying to spare us this agony. This shame. This distress.

It is almost difficult at best to conceive of what Timothy Harris has done to us.

And people who want others to see them as intellectuals prefer to stifle their consciences with their frothy “two paragraphs of good writemanship” than to call out Timothy Harris and tell him that we have had enough.

All those who were agitating for good governance before 16th February, 2015, were only after Dr. Douglas.

They really did not care what was happening to our federation.

Dr. Douglas put ordinary people in proper homes with indoor plumbing and indoor kitchens and gave ordinary people’s children the opportunity to reach as far as they wanted to go academically. All this was obviously very disconcerting to the children and grandchildren of the traditional planter class.

Ordinary people were sitting in the same universities as their children. Doctors, lawyers, engineers abounded among the ordinary and this was unacceptable to those who wanted to keep us in our place.

That is why they launched such a vicious attack on the Basseterre High School and the education of a generation of ordinary people’s children to put a halt to the revolution in education that Dr. Douglas and the Labour Party constantly boasted about.

That is why some of them who were intimately involved in orchestrating the demise of the BHS have fled the inner circle of Timothy Harris.

They have seen him in action and they recognised from early that he was not good for the country. They had make a mistake. A mistake of almost biblical proportions.

For I, like many, am convinced that Labour’s removal from office was not by chance. It was divinely ordained.

We had to see Timothy Harris in action.

And we have seen enough.

All those who went away from us and want to come back must be welcomed with open arms.

Timothy has taken our beloved country to all-time low.

Occupational Safety & Health

By: Joseph Jones

Workers! It is not easy to control our emotions when we feel that we have been slighted or treated unjustly. It can feel that we are mistreated because of our background, the colour of our skin or some physical differences. How much greater the pain is if it is caused by a workmate, your employer; sometimes no doubt all it need is to work at being less sensitive and more forgiving. Listen to this: people who fail to control their emotions often become bitter. You hear that?!

Now let me move on. All of us need encouragement and it is especially true as I am doing in terms of keeping the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union alive.

With encouragement, I feel worthwhile and appreciated in regard to occupational safety and health at the workplaces. I don’t know if you will agree with me. People are selfish, there is little natural affection and encouragement is scarce. I do nothing of my own initiative but just as Joseph Nathaniel France, George De Peana, Dr. Alan Le Serve, Frank Walcott taught me, I write these articles. We live in a stressful times. Some people are bitterly angry and walk about like roaring lions seeking to devour someone. Life in this world can be distressing. Is there any where you can turn for reliable help and comfort? Yes, the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union. Before I close, let me say something in regard to legislation and enforcement.

Legislation can provide workers with minimum standards of protection in the workplaces. Legislation is only good as its enforcement by the government. No government can possibly have sufficient staff to inspect every work place on a regular schedule, to investigate whether or not an act is being upheld, and some governments have been hesitant to persecute certain employers who are in clear violation of the law. Worker, I am urging you that there is a responsibility to fulfill the day to day inspection. They must know that employers meet all their obligation under the law. This is just a little introduction to legislation and enforcement conditions, health and safety. After pressure from the early trade unions came the introduction of legislation and standards dealing specifically with health and safety at work.

*NOTE WELL* THE ST.KITTS-NEVIS TRADES & LABOUR UNION HAS GIVEN FAITHFUL SERVICE. IT TOILS IN ILL LODGING, COLD, HEAT, HUMILIATION, INJUSTICE AND ARBITRARY RULE.

The Problem Of Stress

In the words of Frank Herbert, Dune, “The mind can go either direction under stress – toward positive or toward negative: on or off. Think of it as a spectrum whose extremes are unconsciousness at the negative end and hyperconsciousness at the positive end. The way the mind will learn under stress is strongly influenced by training.”

During a recent illness, I was completely stressed out mentally, physically and emotionally, so I decided to seek the advice of my Doctor and some elderly in my community as well as some other research. However, recent poll show that stress is on the rise, affecting health, family, relationship and work. Also, about one third of adults are living with extreme stress and nearly half of adults (48 percent) believe that their stress has increased over the past five (5) years.

Additionally it is a fact that stress is now taking a toll on people, contributing to health problems, poor relationships and lost productivity at work, according to a new survey released recently by the American Psychological Association (APA)Furthermore, it is fully believed that if we hold a wooden pencil between our hands and slowly apply pressure as we try to bend the pencil, increase our pressure, and the pencil snaps and break. That’s a perfect example of mechanical stress. Thus, stress is described as a pressure or a strain that tends to distort our body, whether it is a pencil or a person. Therefore, up to a point in our lives, we can all take pressure and strain.

At some time though, however, the stress can become so great that just like the pencil, we “snap.” But if and when we “snap” depends wholly on the ways we handle stressful situations. In addition, to make it even more interesting, all stress is not the same, and to handle the stress in our lives, we need to understand what type of stress can be made upon us.Let us continue by looking at the types of stress: Most stress used to be physical and short-term. Now in today’s modern times, stress is usually emotional and long-term. But what does that mean? The Health Experts have clearly stated that all living creatures experience short-term, physical stress almost continuously. However, finding food, adapting to weather changes, reproducing, and growth are also examples of common, short –term stress situations. For as soon as we find our food, or adapt to the season, or reproduce, then the physical stress brought on by these states is eliminated because it was temporary and for a short-term.

However, this type of stress is quite normal, natural, and perhaps even beneficial. Moreover, without a certain amount of stress, no change, progress, or growth would ever take place because we would be in a continuous state of stagnation unless we experience temporary feeling of stress. Therefore, when these stressful situations become long-term, however, they harm results. In addition, when the stress becomes more emotional or mental and less physical, we will have a harder time of dealing with it.Why? Because the responses to physical stress, such as intense hunger, are already learned, and the body has its very own way of handling physical stress, including, it knows how to best compensate for the temporary demands placed on it.However, on the other hand, emotional stress brought about by uncertainties, or feeling of helplessness is very difficult to handle. The Health Experts have also clearly highlightthat we have not learned yet how to deal with the types of stress produced by overdue bills or individual short comings. Moreover, unlike physical stress, these long-term stressful emotional states and fears can last for weeks, months, or even years. What Are The Effects Of Stress: We already know how stress affects us personally; perhaps it makes you feel tired, fatigued, nervous, or depressed. In addition, it is a known fact that stress may or could make us feel as if the weight of the world was on our shoulders.

Thus, emotionally, stress may make us prone to anger, irritability, or even move to tears. But no matter how we personally react to stress, however, the physiological effects of stress are the same for all living creatures. The question that has been asked however, is What happens to our body when we experience stress? Thus, what is the physiological response by the body to physical stress?a. An increase in arterial pressure.b. An increase blood flow to the muscles with a decreased blood flow to the organs.c. An increase rate of cellular metabolism throughout the body.d. An increase in blood glucose.e. An increase in glycolysis in the muscles.f. Increase muscular strength.g. Increased mental activity. However, the overall effect of these responses is to let us perform far more strenuous physical activity than would otherwise be possible. Moreover, the question that has been asked is, Why Is This? Well because if a stressful, threatening, situation is present, then we would probably need to flee from it or fight it. Thus, this is called the fight flight reaction, because an animal is a physically stress-state decides almost instantly to stand and fight or to not and run.

Therefore, we have provided an example of how extreme physical stress can activate the energy reserves of the body: We have seen in newspapers an account of a eighty-year-old grandmother who had been on crutches continuously for the last two years, when a fire broke out in her neighbor’s house and she heard the cries of a trapped child, and immediately she ran into the house and carried the children to freedom before she realized she had thrown her crutches aside. She therefore collapsed and had to be removed by ambulance. It is fully believed that during a time of great crisis, or stress, her body responded so vigorously that she forgot she was disabled. Research has so far clearly shown that stress does not seem to have that destructive effect, and it does not, if it is short-term, physical stress.

Therefore, when stress becomes prolonged and internalized, however, it has decidedly negative results upon the person’s health. Moreover, it is amazing that almost any type of stress can cause the same reaction in the body. However, most Scientists often refer to two kinds of stress: Physical and Neurogenic. Thus, an example of physical stress is being exposed to extreme cold, and an example of neurogenic stress is worryingabout being unable to pay utility bills. Again, it is believed that a vital body can quickly adapt to physical stress, and neurogenic stress, worry or tension. In our next article, we will continue from where we left off from in today’s article. As we closed here for today we leave you with a quote by Mahogany SilverRain, and a poem by An Unknown Author.

“My body needs laughter as much as it needs tears. Both are cleansers of stress.” – Mahogany SilverRain.

A Man In PainBy: An Unknown Author.

Sometimes I feel like giving up,Because people have already given up on me,Looking inward for hope,Eyeing outward for reassurance,Maybe my eyes cannot see.I see no one; blackness cloaks my mind,The light at the end of the tunnel leisurely disappearing,Expectations quickly ending.
Sometimes I feel like dying,Life has no other key besides the one no one can see.My heart is bruised, bleeding to death,Because no one see’s my worth. Is it a crime to be born?To have aspirations, to have your own sentiments. Is being a child a passport to slavery?Did I apply to work this job with no pay?
Sometimes I feel like getting naked,Completely undressing my heart,So that people know how I feel,So that they understand that this pain is real,You look at me and you may envy my life,I have everything I need except this,Joy unfriends me at times I need her most,My friend is in another place; I think I’m lost.

The Crossroads Of Political Destiny

Many Kittitians and Nevisians are finding it extremely difficult to come to grips with the fact that we have been returned to “Devil’s Island” status within just three years and three months of the SCHEME UNITY lot getting into office.

Many are asking “Can this really be happening?” The answer is “Yes, it is!”
As we went to press last week a ruling in an extradition case was in the process of being handed down by one of Her Majesty’s High Court Judges in London, England. Little did most persons suspect the ramifications which some of the findings held in store for our beloved little nation of St Christopher and Nevis.

When our beloved Comrade Leader, Dr. The Right Honourable Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, spoke to the nation over the radio and Internet he brought to our attention various aspects of the judge’s findings in the matter that had been brought before him. Comrade Douglas’ disclosures made our people aware, the first time, of some of the antics attributed to the head of government of this country, based on taped recordings, done by German police, of conversations between a billionaire businessman and one of his associates.

As the recordings have shown, during the course of those conversations information was thrown up which has displayed, to the satisfaction of the court, that public officials (politicians) in Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Lucia were seriously implicated in acts of bribery and other forms of corruption.

As the newspapers went out across the British Isles last Saturday, Sunday and Monday, our nationals in Britain and elsewhere in Europe were shocked, indeed stunned, to find themselves reading about such damning and shameful court findings as they relate to the head of government of their beloved country. Nationals of Antigua and Barbuda and of St. Lucia were equally affected.

The Antigua and St. Lucia parties were not named, but the prime minister of this country was named by office and personally.

It is worthy of note that the Antiguan official, though not named on the tapes or in the transcripts, has resigned from the cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda out of a concern for the good name of his country, the likely impediment which he could have become to his government had he sought to remain in office, and to give his country a fair opportunity to remove itself from beneath the very dark and heavy cloud which had overtaken it consequent upon the court findings in The UK.

Such consideration does not obtain in St. Kitts and Nevis, even though the ‘person of interest’ has been identified by name and by office.

There are those Kittitians and Nevisians who thought that they could use that particular individual to get their hands on the reins of political power in this country, and then dump him. Much to their chagrin they have already found out that any such attempts will be fraught with grave, personal danger.

Realistically the only way out for them is to return to their economic, political and cultural origins, namely within the Labour Movement of this country.

Their anguish is palpable, and we do feel for them as our brothers and sisters. Once again we assure them that they are always MOST welcome to return to their roots. Our doors and our arms are always wide open and most welcoming. We are a forgiving people, and we have demonstrated that time and again.

In last week’s edition, we pointed out that ever since the change of government in February, 2015, our beloved St. Kitts and Nevis has been ‘suffering from a multiplicity of political and governmental ailments’ which have caused serious declines in various aspects of our country’s affairs.

We went on to point out that, as a direct consequence, from that time ‘our country has been suffering from a very serious leadership deficit’, and that has led to what is known as ‘Political Paralysis’, namely a ‘state of affairs which always causes political drift and general instability’.

Without a doubt the ‘news’ out of London will only make matters worse. It brings into stark relief many of the grave dangers that we face, as a people, and as a nation.

Over the course of this weekend The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party will be meeting in its Annual Conference.

We will be assessing the organisational progress which we have made over the past three years. Our efforts to improve our functioning have been most warmly welcomed by one and all. We thank our beloved Comrade Leader for his role, front and center, in bringing about these transformations and other improvements in our party.

It is the sincere hope of this newspaper that our comrades will see fit to once again unanimously re-elect Comrade Douglas as our party leader. He has proven, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that he is the fittest person to lead our movement at this particular point in time.

Given the current state of affairs in our nation, of the general decline nationally due to the absence of political leadership, of the “rot” extant in the SCHEME UNITY disunity, and the befuddlement so evident in our people, the leadership of Comrade Douglas is just what we need if we are to survive the horrors and lift our country out of the morass into which UNITIM has landed us.

Our nation is now at a political crossroad. We are facing the very real possibility that the determination of a megalomaniac to hold on to power could push us deeper into totalitarianism. We are already well along the road to political and economic ruination.
In order to deal successfully with those threats and dangers we MUST be well prepared, well organised, and well led. Let us therefore go forth to our 2018 Annual Conference with a determination to do all that is best for our nation and our movement.

Comrade, friends, and supporters of Labour, this is no time to be timid or afraid. Our future and that of our children depends heavily on our organisation and preparedness to face and deal with the grave dangers which are both clear and present.

We MUST act boldly and clearly, and take the correct road to ensure the political destiny of our beloved country.

How In The Name Of High Heavens, Can The People’s Labour Party (PLP) Be The Real Labour? Part (2)

By Earle Clarke

“Throughout USA history, the working class has fought for better wages and working conditions. These struggles often became violent and it is important to remember the men and women who died to bring us the weekend, the 8 – hour workday, the end of child labour, job safety and job security. For most of USA history, going on strike meant something far more radical. It was an indictment not only of individual worksites, but also of a social order in which few were rich and most were desperately poor. Going on strike could –and often did –mean beaten by strike breakers, shot at by National Guardsmen, or even have bombs dropped on you by bi- planes!” We owe it a duty to express our sincerest THANKS and GRATITUDE to those who martyred their lives so that we as workers can enjoy the fruits of their martyrdom in our work places today!” Commentary.

Dear reader, I looked out expectantly on May 7th, 2018, to see if I spotted our esteemed Prime Minister in our LABOUR DAY MARCH, but was very disappointed to learn that he had skipped the island the day before and was therefore missing in action. How could our Prime Minister and leader of the People’s Labour Party (PLP) desert us on this Historic Day for Workers, when he claims that his Political Party, the PLP is the REAL LABOUR? There is a passage of scripture which says, “By their deeds ye shall know them!” We have now come to observe how deceitful, how dangerous, how unashamed, how treacherous, our Prime Minister is, trying to give us the impression that his PLP is the REAL LABOUR. But, if his PLP was the Real Thing, why didn’t he organize the Labour Day March? Why didn’t he go and lay wreaths on the graves of the fallen comrades? Why didn’t he march with the Workers of the country since his Party is grounded with us? His absence from the country has sent the MESSAGE LOUD and CLEAR, that he is a FAKE.

That he has no use for young people and the working class. That he wanted to mama-guy us into believing that his PLP is the REAL LABOUR! We are now possessed with the knowledge that PLP is a mirage, it appears to be real, but, in truth and in fact, it is unreal. According to one of granny’s sayings – “It no dey no way!” We, the conscientious workers have sent the message LOUD and CLEAR to him that we have returned to our ROOST; we have been welcomed home like the Prodigal sons and daughters and the killing of the calf and the merriment will take place whenever he rings the bell and the ELECTIONS are called, so that we can unseated him. We will wait patiently until such time to celebrate! All of a sudden callers are calling in to the Radio Stations to complain that Labour Day is for Workers and should not be used by any Political Party, but these naysayers are forgetting their history; perhaps they are shell shocked from that massive show of support on the LABOUR DAY MARCH of May, 7th, 2018, which sent the message that the days of the unity mirage are at an end;
The people of New Town have already begun to send the Thunderous Message to the unity mirage representative that he has been weighed in the balances and found to be woefully wanting. You see, when you are not a people’s person and, when you do not have a Campaign Manager to improve your image, dog better than you. It is now clear as crystal that the mirage rep, for East Basseterre, gone eeen! That London Bridge has already begun to collapse. You see, dear reader, it is quite possible for some of the people to be fooled some of the time, but it is totally impossible for all of the people to be fooled all of the time. At some point, the people will come to their senses and realize that they have been duped, for, every man and woman has been formidably blessed with survival sense. At some time or other these downtrodden people would come to realize who is really and truly for them and who is against their best interests. According to my grandmother, “It is only a matter of time before they wake up!” And they have already been awakened and smelling the coffee.

Let me now continue the education of you my readers as to the IMPORTANCE of LABOUR DAY. Because of the knock–about that workers were receiving, they had seen first—hand that capitalism only benefitted their bosses, trading workers lives for profit. Thousands of men, women and children were Dying needlessly every year in the workplace, with life expectancy in the early twenties in some industries and little hope but death, rising out of their destitution. Socialism, the philosophy of the working class and the alternative to the exploitative capitalist system, offered another option. At its National Convention in Chicago, USA, held in 1884, The FEDERATION of ORGANISED TRADES and LABOUR UNIONS (which later became the AMERICAN FEDERATION of LABOUR), proclaimed that “EIGHT HOURS SHALL CONSTITUTE A LEGAL DAY’S WORK FROM AND AFTER MAY 1st, 1886.” The following year, the Federation of Trades and Labour Unions, backed by many knights of Labour Locals, reiterated their proclamation that 8 hours be the Legal working day and that they would support their demands with strikes and demonstrations.

At first, most radicals regarded this demand as too reformist – failing to strike at the root of the evil. One year before the Haymarket Massacre (which I would touch later) Samuel Fielden pointed out in a newspaper called the ALARM, that, whether you work for 8 hours or 10 hours, you were still a slave! Despite the misgivings of some workers, an estimated quarter of a million workers in the Chicago area became involved in the battle to implement the 8 hour work day, including The Trades and Labour Assembly, the SOCIALISTIC LABOUR PARTY and Local Knights of Labour. As more and more of the workforce united against the employers, these radical workers decided to fight for the 8 hour day, realizing that the tide of opinion and determination of most wage workers were set in this direction. With the involvement of more and more of the radical elements of the workers, there seemed to be an infusion of greater issues than the 8-hour day.

There grew a sense of a greater social revolution beyond the more immediate gains of shortened hours, but a drastic change in the economic structure of capitalism. In a PROCLAMATION printed just before May 1st 1886, one publisher appealed to workers with this plea: “The wage system is the only cause of the World’s Misery. It is supported by the rich classes and, to destroy it, they must either be made to work or die.” “Make your demand for EIGHT HOURS work day from the capitalistic Bloodhounds.”Not surprisingly, the entire city was prepared for mass bloodshed, reminiscent of the Great Railroad Strike in Martinsburg, Virginia, July 14th, 1877, when soldiers and police gunned down hundreds of striking workers. On May 1st, 1886, more than 399,000 workers in 13,000 businesses across the USA walked off their jobs in the first May Day Celebration in history. In Chicago the epicenter for the 8-hour day agitators, 40,000 went out on strike in the public’s eye. This action by the working class was despised by the capitalists.

The names of the Leaders of the working class, Albert Parsons, Johann Most, August SPIES and Louis Lingg became household words in Chicago and throughout the Country. Parades, bands and tens of thousands of demonstrators in the streets, exemplified the workers strength and unity, yet did not become violent as the Newspapers predicted. More and more workers continued to walk off their jobs until he number swelled to to nearly 100,000, yet peace prevailed. It was not until 2 days later on May 3rd, that violence broke out at the McCormick Reaper Works between police and strikers.

For six months armed Pinkerton Agents and the Police harassed, beat and locked-out steelworkers as they picketed. Most of these workers belonged to the Metal Workers Union. During a speech near to the McCormick Plant, some 200 demonstrators joined the steel workers on the picket line. Beatings with Police clubs, escalated into rock throwing by the strikers which the Police responded to with gunfire. At least 2 strikers were killed and an unknown number were wounded. Filled with rage, a public meeting was called by some of the strikers for the following day in Haymarket Square to discuss the Police Brutality. Due to the bad weather and short notice, only about 3000 out of the tens of thousands from that day before showed up. This affair included families with children and the Mayor of Chicago himself. Later, the Mayor would testify that the crowd behaved calm and orderly and that speaker August Spies, made no suggestion…. for immediate use of force or violence toward any person. As the speech wound down, two detectives rushed to the main body of the Police, reporting that a speaker was using inflammatory language, inciting the Police to walk up to the speakers wagon.

As the Police began to disperse the already thinning crowd, a bomb was thrown into the Police ranks. No one knows who threw the bomb, but speculations varied from blaming anyone of the strikers to an agent provocateur working for the Police. Enraged, Police fired into the crowd. The exact number of civilians killed was never determined, but an estimated 7 or eight civilians died and up to forty were wounded. One Police officer died immediately and another seven died in the following weeks. Later evidence indicated that one of the Police deaths could be attributed to the bomb and that all the other Police Fatalities had or could have been due to their own indiscriminate gun fire. Apart from the bomb thrower who was never identified, it was not the strikers who perpetrated the violence. Eight strikers –Albert Parsons, August Spies, Samuel Fielden, Oscar Neebe, Michael Schwab, George Engel, Adolph Fischer and Louis Lingg, were arrested and convicted of murder, even though only 3 were present at Haymarket on that day. And those 3 were in full view of all, when the bombing occurred.

The jury in their trial comprised all business leaders in a gross mockery of justice. If the workers were agitating for better wages and better conditions from their bosses and their bosses found themselves as jurors on any case involving the Leaders of the workers, justice will never be meted out fairly. The same thing occurred in St. Kitts in the Attempted Coup of 1967: The financiers of this Attempted Coup were the jurors on the case, so their puppets would be brought in “NOT GUILTY!” After many futile Appeals, George Engel, Adolph Fischer, August Spies, Albert Parsons were hung to death on November 11th, 1887. Louis Lingg, in his final protest of the State’s claim of authority and punishment, took his own life the night before with an explosive device in his mouth. Oscar Neebe, Michael Schwab, Samuel Fielden, were pardoned six years later by Governor Altgeld who publicly lambasted the Judge on a travesty of Justice. Dear reader, “The sacrifices of so many people cannot be forgotten, or we will end up fighting for those same gains all over again. This is why we celebrate MAY DAY or LABOUR DAY!”
