Workers! It is not easy to control our emotions when we feel that we have been slighted or treated unjustly. It can feel that we are mistreated because of our background, the colour of our skin or some physical differences. How much greater the pain is if it is caused by a workmate, your employer; sometimes no doubt all it need is to work at being less sensitive and more forgiving. Listen to this: people who fail to control their emotions often become bitter. You hear that?!
Now let me move on. All of us need encouragement and it is especially true as I am doing in terms of keeping the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union alive.
With encouragement, I feel worthwhile and appreciated in regard to occupational safety and health at the workplaces. I don’t know if you will agree with me. People are selfish, there is little natural affection and encouragement is scarce. I do nothing of my own initiative but just as Joseph Nathaniel France, George De Peana, Dr. Alan Le Serve, Frank Walcott taught me, I write these articles. We live in a stressful times. Some people are bitterly angry and walk about like roaring lions seeking to devour someone. Life in this world can be distressing. Is there any where you can turn for reliable help and comfort? Yes, the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour Union. Before I close, let me say something in regard to legislation and enforcement.
Legislation can provide workers with minimum standards of protection in the workplaces. Legislation is only good as its enforcement by the government. No government can possibly have sufficient staff to inspect every work place on a regular schedule, to investigate whether or not an act is being upheld, and some governments have been hesitant to persecute certain employers who are in clear violation of the law. Worker, I am urging you that there is a responsibility to fulfill the day to day inspection. They must know that employers meet all their obligation under the law. This is just a little introduction to legislation and enforcement conditions, health and safety. After pressure from the early trade unions came the introduction of legislation and standards dealing specifically with health and safety at work.
*NOTE WELL* THE ST.KITTS-NEVIS TRADES & LABOUR UNION HAS GIVEN FAITHFUL SERVICE. IT TOILS IN ILL LODGING, COLD, HEAT, HUMILIATION, INJUSTICE AND ARBITRARY RULE.
