BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 14th December 2018)- Messages of warning were abuzz via social media, particularly WhatsApp, earlier this week after news broke that convicted murderer Romeo ‘Buncum’ Cannonier had escaped police custody while on a work assignment in the Lime Kiln community.

In less than an hour, however, alarms of fear and concern among citizens and residents were hushed after a follow-up on the situation revealed that the prisoner believed to be in his 40s was back in police custody having turned himself into the authorities.

It is unclear what happened on Tuesday morning (11th December) when Cannonier, who was among other prisoners, ran away while on work assignment in the vicinity of the government operated abattoir.

The incident is said to have occurred sometime after 11AM that morning.

Police confirmed the runaway incident which has sparked a public debate about why such a prisoner was not monitored heavily by security while out in the open.

Cannonier is said to have turned himself into police sometime after 12noon that day.

He is currently serving life at the Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) having been convicted of the 2004 killing of police constable Delvin Nisbett and the 2005 killing of Gavin ‘Magilla’ Gilbert.
