BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday, 20th June 2024)- Premier Mark Brantley has mentioned the need for a higher birth rate in St. Kitts and Nevis as one of the factors to ensure the nation’s sustainable development. On topic of the 2021 census (which saw a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being completed), in speaking at his press conference held on Thursday 20th June 2024, he gave insights about the country’s population dynamics by way of pointing to the need to address the demographic challenges.
The 2022 census recorded the largest population on record for the federation, totaling 51,320 persons. As understood from him, such marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time since 1960 that the population has exceeded 50,000.
Brantley stressed that the current population is “far too few to develop St. Kitts and Nevis in a sensible way.” He informed that the 2022 consensus population distribution statistics are 38,138 for St. Kitts and 13,182 for Nevis.
Of note, the overall population has increased by 1,169 persons since the 2011 census. “It is clear we need people,” Brantley said, suggesting that the solution might involve a mix of encouraging higher birth rates, supporting labor immigration, and inviting diaspora members to return home.
He extended gratitude to the statistics offices in both Nevis and St. Kitts for their diligent work.
