BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 4th June 2021) — Workers who are in quarantine or isolation are being asked to submit a request for an official letter to be sent to their employers, which can also be used for social security claims. CMO Dr. Hazel Laws provided the details at the emergency NEOC briefing on Tuesday 1st June 2021. Requests can be made through headmasters of schools (for parents of quarantined children) or by calling the COVID-19 hotline via 311.
“The individuals who are in isolation or self-quarantine are requesting that official letter certifying that they were placed in isolation or quarantine, in order for them to submit same to their employers, and this letter can also be used for their social security claims,” Dr. Laws said. This follows the Department of Labour’s 26 May appeal to employers to preserve employment and continue paying wages to quarantined workers, up to at least 35%, as workers may claim sickness benefits under Schedule 8 Part 3 Section 9:2 of the Social Security Act.
