On Tuesday the first sitting of parliament took place. The sitting was the occasion for delivering the Throne Speech, which was most ably done by Her Excellency Ms Marcella Liburd in her capacity as The Governor General’s Deputy.
The general tenor of the speech was a reassuring message that the nation, as a ship of state, has been righted and steadied.
That reassurance was most welcome, especially as our nation had been subjected to some truly horrific experiences over the course of the past seven plus years.
Among the many specific areas for corrective actions are a few of which we make special mention at this time.
The new Labour administration’s intention to prioritize safety and security is indeed worthy of the highest commendation. Amongst other things it shows that Labour does indeed care for our people, all the people of St Kitts and Nevis. For decades we have always asserted that Labour cares. Yes, indeed, dear people, Labour does care! Our adherence to The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is further testimony of our genuine determination to reduce social and all forms of inequality amongst the people of our nation.
At the level of the economy and our nation’s finances, the intention to establish a growth and resilience fund speaks to our government’s recognition of the compelling need to be creative and innovative in making the greatest possible use of our nation’s limited natural resources, while always seeking ways to exploit those with which we are more generously blessed.
Thus it is that the stated intention to restore tourism and manufacturing to their previous levels and beyond deserves the fullest possible cooperation of everyone.
People of St Kitts and Nevis, we are on the move again, and in the right direction.
Our ship of state has indeed been righted and steadied. The new administration deserves our fullest cooperation. Let us all give it readily and happily!
