The Labour Spokesman
Today, Good Friday, we reflect on that first Friday when Jesus Christ surrendered himself to the most brutal torture which he endured, and his terrible death at Calvary. Dying on the cross to redeem all of mankind was an extremely heavy undertaking — a case of one person taking on ALL the sins of the world. Jesus endured it all because of his love for us, humans, and in due obedience to His Heavenly Father, whose love for us is without limit. But let us always remember that there is no way into the love of God except through the cross.
As we reflect on those facts it would be helpful for us to recall two very important considerations taught us by Jesus Himself. In the second section of The Sermon From The Mount, Matthew Chapter 6 Verse 24, he taught us: ‘No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other: or he will sustain the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.’ On this Good Friday let us pray, meditate, and bow low before the crucified Christ. Let us also appreciate God’s great love for the world, and for each of us individually, mindful that all spiritual blessings and treasure are to be found in the cross, through which we are restored to paradise, God’s gifts, and His sure promise of eternal life. At midnight on Holy Saturday we will have come to the end of another Lenten journey, and enter into that most joyous season of Easter — let us do so mindful and fully appreciative of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice, and God’s unlimited love for us all.
