The inaugural Sugar Mas Awards (SMAs) hosted by Unoma “Lady Sunshine” Allen was held on Saturday 12th November 2022 and it was indeed a grand affair. This auspicious ceremony was held at the Marriott Ballroom, and 69 individuals and entities were honored either virtually or in person for pioneering excellence, outstanding achievements, and longevity in Carnival, National Carnival, and Sugar Mas.

The evening started with welcome remarks from the Minister responsible for Carnival, Hon. Samal Duggins who chronicled the history of Carnival through its different stages of development. He expressed his delight that the SMAs will now be an annual event and thanked the St Kitts Nevis National Carnival Committee (SKNNCC)for this significant initiative.

At the end of a successful night, SKNNCC chairperson, Shannon Hawley commended the organizing committee for their outstanding presentation and reinforced the point that the SMAs are here to stay and many more Carnival practitioners and supporters will be honored in the years to come. The awards were presented by Hazel Webster, Director of Carnival, Roberitine Webbe, Director of Creative Economy, Valencia Syder, Permanent Secretary with responsibility for Carnival, Shannon Hawley, SKNNCC Chairperson, and Hon.
