It is but a very short time since our new administration assumed office, yet there are certain elements in our country who have shown their determination to deny them the customary honeymoon period of grace.
The practice of allowing a new government a honeymoon period is much more than a tradition. It is a mark of respect for the wishes of the people, and is intended to give democracy an opportunity to work in the people’s best interest.
Sadly, ever so sadly, we have here in St Kitts and Nevis, groups of rapscallions, evil-doers, political scoundrels, and, even more sadly, outright criminal elements, who are determined to frustrate the will of the people, and who indulge in every imaginable practice designed to achieve such undemocratic objectives.
One such creature is a very patch fellow, who has the unenviable record of having been fired more times than anyone else in history. He has returned to a station from which he was unceremoniously banned some years ago, and is indulging in his malpractice of falsely accusing his perceived enemies of the innumerable crimes and evil doings of which he himself is guilty.
Many others appear impatient to follow in that creature’s footsteps.
We of this newspaper, call on all members of our Labour administration to continue rising above the levels of those opposed to us. You have a heavy responsibility to our people, and you do not have much time in which to fulfill your commitments.
The world is fast approaching a period of economic upheaval and uncertainty, and we here in St Kitts and Nevis will not escape the negative effects.
At page 19 of this edition we are carrying a Reuters article highlighting steps being taken in The Bahamas to prepare their people for such grim times.
We call on our government to study the Bahamas example and initiate steps to likewise prepare our people for such times.
It is of the utmost importance that our young administration do their utmost best to STAY THE COURSE, PLEASE.
