BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, October 26, 2021 (STEP) — In observance of Blindness Awareness Month, the St. Kitts (Basseterre) Lions Club held the annual ‘Journey for Sight’ walk on Saturday October 23rd and presented two white canes to members of the St. Kitts Society for the Blind — the first time the walk was held since 2019, having been suspended due to COVID-19 in 2020. The walk was led by Lions Club President Ms. Heather Grant, who walked alongside a member of the St. Kitts Society for the Blind, Ms. Sharon Fredrick. Participants walked from the Cenotaph at the War Memorial in Fortlands through Bay Road, Irish Town, downtown Basseterre, New Town, Sandown Road, Pond Road, Cayon Street, Greenlands, Burden Street and back to the War Memorial.
President of the St. Kitts Society for the Blind Mr. Rockliffe Bowen received the white canes on behalf of two members: Mr. Michael Rawlins of Tabernacle Village, who could not attend, and Mrs. Ethel Bowen. “This sensitises the general public so that they can know how important sight is,” said Mr. Bowen. “I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of our executive and membership to say thanks to the President and to the other members of the Lions Club for putting on this walk every year, because this is something that we as blind and visually impaired persons look forward to.”
