BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 31st January 2024) – Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has disclosed that “if you look at the foundation on which this country is built, you would recognise that it is really the history of the St.
Kitts and Nevis Labour Party.” In outlining areas such as social security, democracy (right to vote), health care, education system and rights to the land, such sentiments were shared during his greetings remarks at the church service in observance of the party’s 92nd anniversary held at the Basseterre Wesleyan Holiness Church located on Cayon Street on Sunday 28th January 2024. In pointing to the SKNLP’s history, he stated: “I want to say to us that the St.
Kitts Nevis Labor Party, its history, is really the history of St. Kitts and Nevis. The party was born in 1932, the 25th of January, thereabout; 100 years or so after emancipation of slavery but the conditions of our people had not changed much and out of the prayers and the aspirations and the yearnings of the people, the party was born to respond to the needs of God’s people from the political perspective.” Dr.
Drew added: “It is the oldest political organization in the English-speaking Caribbean. There is none in the Bahamas that is older, none in Jamaica that is older, none in Barbados that is older and none in Guyana that is older or any of them in between.
I am still doing my research. There might be one older than us in the whole Caribbean and that might be the Communist Party of Cuba but I am doing my research. Nonetheless, in the English-speaking Caribbean, this organisation is the oldest political organization, and I say that with pride and I look at the factors that are responsible for keeping this organization together.” The SKNLP Leader underscored the significance of the foundational principles.
“It is not by man’s will alone but the very foundation and the principles on
which this party was established, the foundation of being a force for good connect to the principles of God. It is because irrespective of everything, the foundational principles keep us together and bind us together. So when others fall apart, irrespective of everything, they keep us together as an organization.
