The ongoing civil disturbances in Haiti are a reminder that the requirements of governing a state are constant, unrelenting, and very, very demanding.
In other words, it is a twenty-four-hours-a-day business.
Those who opt to undertake such responsibilities need to be deeply committed to providing the requisite types and levels of service. It is not the kind of business for the faint hearted.
Even as the committed ones attempt to live up to the tasks, many others do their utmost to frustrate the efforts of those devoted to serve their constituents.
Added to all of which is the fact that other states and people exert pressures designed to thwart the good intentions of the faithful servants of the people.
Here in St Kitts and Nevis the position is really no different. Even as we try to extricate ourselves from the horrors of the recent seven-and-a-half years, agents of evil are already hard at work, trying to derail the efforts of our young administration.
Last week we called upon members of the new administration to ‘stay the course’. This week we repeat that call, and urge that every effort be made by those in government to remain united in purpose and in their efforts to deliver for the people.
To those who are being impatient, we call upon you to be reasonable. Everything cannot be done all at once.
There is an old saying: ‘Rome was not built in a day’. That saying still holds good. Please be patient. The promises will be duly fulfilled. There is so much that needs to be done, and in such a limited time frame. Added to which is the fact that resources are limited, and thus implementation efforts have to be carefully considered and scheduled.
To one and all we say, please, be patient. It will all happen eventually.
Always remember, Rome was not built in a day!
