BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (September 2022) — Chairperson of the National Carnival Committee Shannon Hawley has revealed that twenty-five (25) troupes have registered for Sugar Mas 51 — a record fourteen (14) J’Ouvert troupes and eleven (11) Grand Parade troupes. Speaking on WINNFM’s ‘Island Tea’ on Thursday 22nd September 2022, Hawley expressed that “everybody is ready,” commenting on the record numbers as she alluded to the return of street activities after COVID-19. “The regulars are back and we have new grand parade troupes who have registered so we’re really looking forward to an amazing two-day street event. We have a record 14 J’Ouvert troupes registered this year so you understand the magnitude of this production for national carnival.”
“In addition to these 14 J’Ouvert troupes and 11 grand parade troupes, we have over 30 private registered events — ranging from fashion events to traditional fetes, paint and sip events, and boat rides. We’re seeing already the ‘Save the Date’ events popping up from the private promoters so everybody is ready — ready!” She urged the bands to release songs early: “We want to ensure that the music is out early. We know that every year there is a problem with road march songs coming out late; people don’t even know what the road march tune is so we want to give the bands incentives to come out early and release their road march songs early because this year we are basically doubling the road march winnings.” Sugar Mas 51 activities commence Friday December 2, 2022 and conclude with the Last Lap Parade on Tuesday January 3, 2023, under the theme CELEBRATE AS ONE FOR SUGAR MAS 51.
