BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 25th January 2024) – In reference to the 1935 Buckley’s Uprising, Spokesperson of the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order Ras Iyah is encouraging all citizens and residents to learn from the ways of the ancestors in protecting human rights.
This media house had a sit-down interview on Wednesday 24th January 2024 ahead of the yearly observance event slated for Sunday 28th January 2024, starting at 3:00PMunder the theme ‘Celebration of the 89th anniversary of our ancestors, becoming martyrs of the nation for preserving our human rights. Buckley’s Uprising: 1835.’ According to Ras Iyah: “The theme used that term because we still see much even though as how we say the legislation that come into frame and make enough of the things of being able to reenact and how the conditions we were facing in the 19th century and 1935.” – LOCAL NEWS –
“…and to see how some of the things are when it comes to the constitution, we find a lot of errors still being inflicted when it comes to our human rights, not just Rastafari but in particular the whole general public and so we hope that we could see some more greater changes come to these protections that were agitated in 1935 and early before 1935,” he added. When asked about plans and preparations, he had this to say: “For this event we’re looking at having our ancestors be respected with three honorary plaques being honored to some of the people who have been the master there in the Workers’ League and we find it very imperative to honor these people because they are ones who are able to steer the course not saying that we received many at the time but we are able to know that there was some kind of representation being agitated in the time of the uprising and after the uprising so we say we thank for those who paved the way for us to see that what we call a representation being in the legislation and in the aspect of capital development within our shores of St.
Kitts and Nevis.” Ras Iyah added: “…for the event of
this year we are going steadily and going back in the same area as how we’re seeing it at the moment located in the Buckley’s Estate area and we are seeing that we like to have speeches, singing and poetry taking place to be part of the commemoration for the 89th anniversary of the Buckley’s Uprising. and we have a team that we like to share and what we see fitting to honor and honor our ancestors.” Asked about the activity of the government’s newly-installed commemoration committee, he shared: Well, I’m part of the representative from the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order and we have been able to see that just recently there was a twomeeting take place last week and this week Tuesday so there’s some outline going to take from the committee step forward now on so they will be doing something to have approach to the communities and what they’re insisting to elevate the information and the studies of what they would like to imply within the memorial park that is outlined from the administration in the cabinet decision and we hope that in these courts, that these things will come to have good stand not just for the Buckley’s area but the whole entire St. Kitts and Nevis so our people could really look back at what the history meant in our time of 1935 to 2024.” Underlining the importance of the 1935 Buckley’s Uprising, Ras Iyah said: “Well, I would say in this short term that at least our ancestors really say the struggle still continues so we have to really know now that this generation don’t go down in the same domain that our ancestors faced in 1935.” Front Page Image: Spokesperson of the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order Ras Iyah (Spokesman Snap)
