We are now in the season of Advent and as a predominantly Christian people, the commemoration and celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ is one of the most significant events on the Christian calendar. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the temporal dimensions of this year’s celebrations will be somewhat tempered and reduced. Large numbers of our people will be more than a little bit disappointed. However, this turn of events could well be a huge blessing in disguise. The restrictions mandated by the COVID-19 crisis should make us reflect on where we may be losing ourselves over the years, including the many ways in which we have strayed further from God. COVID-19 presents us with a great opportunity to re-discover who we truly are, both as individuals and as a people, as well as the true nature and strength of our Christian faith. Let us put Christ back into Christmas.
