BASSETERRE (Friday 12th February 2021) — A police officer standing on the back of a man faced down in a drain with running water, captured via cell phone by a passerby, has resulted in widespread allegations of police brutality in Nevis on Saturday 6th February 2021. The faced-down man can be heard saying “A can’t breathe.” The Police High Command issued a statement saying it had “viewed with deep concern” the video and that an investigation had been launched. The statement was criticised by the public for not containing information about disciplinary actions against the officers involved. Police say they remain “committed to the fight against criminality and strongly believe in respecting human rights and the dignity of others.”
