BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 16th March 2023) – Police are reporting that the captain of the boat which entered the federation illegally carrying Haitians has been handed prison sentences of more than 12 months and a fine, which comes over a month after the incident.
Jailed for the offence is 45-year-old Danny Henry, a national of Dominica. Via police statement issued on Thursday 16th March 2023, it was revealed that Henry was convicted and sentenced on 15th March 2023 following a court hearing at the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court.
As reported, he was sentenced to six (6) months imprisonment for entering a port that is not a formal port; 12 months imprisonment for entering the Federation without the consent of an immigration officer; and required to pay $5000 EC in six months on Customs charges or face six months in prison. Following the incident, police informed that on February 06, 2023, Henry and Brisone Desir (a 25-year-old national of Haiti) were charged for the offences of Illegal Entry at a Port that is not a Formal Port of Entry and Disembarking Without the Consent of an Immigration Officer.
Local authorities had also reported that fifteen (15) individuals were taken into custody following a report made to the police about a boat coming ashore at Gallows Bay, Nevis. It was disclosed further that the report was received on February 03, 2023, at about 6 p.m, and that the information given also stated that two males came out of the boat and were walking towards Bath Village.
Officers from The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and The St. Kitts and Nevis Customs and Excise Department responded. The two males were found in Bath Village and were stopped and questioned. It was revealed that the men were nationals of Dominica and Haiti.
According to police, they (the boat occupants) arrived on a motor vessel that was anchored off the coast in the Gallows Bay area, and made their way to the shore using a dinghy. Officers accompanied the men to the vessel where they found thirteen (13) nationals of Haiti – ten (10) adults and three (3) juveniles – onboard. you therefore serve as an important nexus between regional and national interests.
