Such was the reply, in part, from Prime Minister and Minister of National Security Dr. Terrance Drew when asked by a local reporter about St. Kitts-Nevis’ position on the full free movement of CARICOM nationals during his Round Table media session held on Thursday 7th March 2024.
“But in principle, you would want to see an integrated region. data, more information. How will this be implemented? Bring our own issues forward. How will this affect St. Kitts and Nevis? Those are the discussions going on.” However, it has to be done in a way where each country will see better, not be in a worse position… or in a position where the citizens are not convinced that it’s to the benefit of their country, and therefore, looking at it closely, we are monitoring it,” Prime Minister Drew added.
His comments come about in light of the ongoing debate stemming from the CARICOM (Caribbean Community) current discussion on the hot topic of allowing the free movement of nationals across members from Sunday 31st March 2024. According to Dr.
Drew: “St. Kitts and Nevis’ position is that… anything we do will be in the best strategic interest of St. Kitts and Nevis. Let me put that forward. Nothing we will do… to the detriment of St. Kitts and Nevis. Whether it’s on the migration issue, in terms of Haiti [as another reporter has asked] or whether it’s on the issue of free movement.” “But to say that St.
