BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Wednesday 11th May 2022) — PAM National Political Leader Shawn Richards, freshly dismissed as Deputy Prime Minister, has indicated that the PAM council will decide the status of its Deputy Leader Eugene Hamilton, who remains part of the government as newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister while his three other PAM colleagues have been fired. Speaking to local reporters outside the Arrival Hall of the R. L. B. International Airport on Wednesday 11th May 2022 after returning from overseas where he had attended a funeral: “That is a decision for the council of the People’s Action Movement to decide and not myself.”
Richards stated that the firings have not damaged PAM’s cause: “This absolutely has not done any damage to the cause of the People’s Action Movement or CCM. As a matter of fact, I think it has given our supporters a greater resolve in ensuring that after the next general elections, Dr. Harris will not be the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis. That is certain.” Richards also questioned the legitimacy of PM Harris’s leadership: “Dr. Harris no longer has the moral authority to lead the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Six of us would have written to the Governor General indicating that we no longer support him, so as far as I’m concerned, his leadership at this particular point in time is illegitimate. He now only has two other elected members supporting him out of eleven elected members of parliament, and that certainly sends a wrong message in terms of democracy.”
Notably, Hamilton, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Eight, has informed the party that he will not be contesting the next General Elections. Richards said a number of persons have indicated interest in contesting Constituency Eight.
