BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Wednesday 11th May 2022) — “Mr. Harris, I know you pay attention to these programmes. Let me say to you this: It is we in Team Unity who took you up, dusted you off and made something out of you when you had been discarded to the scrapheap of political history in this country.” These were the sentiments of Premier Mark Brantley, Leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), speaking on his weekly ‘On The Mark’ VON radio programme on Wednesday 11th May 2022, following the Prime Minister’s announcement the day before firing six opposing cabinet colleagues.
Brantley stated that PM Harris cannot fire him because he was not the one who hired him: “For fifteen years I have been their representative and they keep electing me with larger numbers. The people of number nine St. John’s and St. Paul’s elected me from 2007 until now; it is they who hired me, therefore with respect, you can’t fire me cause you never hired me. What happened yesterday is temporary, a mere blip because the saints will once more go marching in.” He also reminded PM Harris: “The stone that the builder refuse sometimes becomes the chief corner stone. I will remind Dr. Harris that he was fired by Denzil Douglas and he came back as prime minister. So if our history holds true, those that were fired will come back and be in government.”
Brantley was scathing about Harris’s governance: “Timothy Harris has succeeded in making St. Kitts and Nevis a laughing stock of the region. If Timothy Harris had any desire to save Team Unity, he could have come to the table at any point in time and say ‘Gentlemen, I understand your concerns, let me see to address these concerns.’ Not once did he sit with his colleagues to say ‘Look, I realize there’s an issue; let us discuss.’”
