Charlestown, Nevis, April 16, 2020 – Prison officers at the Prison Farm in Nevis are appealing to the authorities to end what they describe as discrimination being meted out to them during the State of Emergency.
Officers from St Kitts are unable to return home to their families because of restrictions imposed on ferry services. According to a source, some officers have had to work for 14 days non-stop before the Coast Guard could assist them with transportation.
Fire officers on Nevis have reportedly been given the privilege of moving between Basseterre and Charlestown via water taxi at no personal cost, while prison officers have been told they must foot their own transportation costs — a minimum of $100 for a round trip by water taxi, compared to $50 to $60 via the regular ferries.
Officers have resorted to using social media to air their grievances, as formal channels have yielded no response.
