BASSETERRE (Friday 8th January 2021) — The Ministry of National Security has acknowledged that police accidentally charged new fees for processing the renewal of firearms licences. Permanent Secretary Osmond Petty said a budget discussion document was leaked to social media, which he called “unfortunate, irresponsible, and malicious.” He clarified that all proposed fees and charges for various licences and government permits are still before Cabinet for a determination, and the charging of new firearms licence renewal fees “was inadvertently implemented” before Cabinet approval. None of the proposals constitutes new taxes or any increase in taxes — the focus is on aligning fees with the cost of service delivery.
