Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 6, 2020 (RSCNPF) — The Head of the National Intervention Team, Inspector Rosemary Isles-Joseph, disclosed that the group has been well-received in the Hispanic communities visited so far as they work to educate Spanish-speaking communities about COVID-19 safety protocols.
The Team has been visiting areas with large numbers of Hispanic residents, such as McKnight and Newtown, going to individual homes to speak with occupants and using a loud hailer while walking through the area. Inspector Isles-Joseph noted that Officer Laddima McSheene, who is trilingual, translated information for persons who did not speak much English. Informational leaflets from the NEOC were also distributed.
“Those in McKnight, they were cooperative. They were wearing masks,” the Inspector noted, while adding that Newtown residents were “more difficult because when we reached Newtown, they were congregating in large crowds.” The initiative is expected to be ongoing throughout the State of Emergency, with plans to extend the exercise to all communities.
