A government’s role in any country is primarily to manage the resources of said country. Here in St. Kitts-Nevis, in office sits a new St. KittsNevis Labour administration. Of course, the party is not new but the leadership and make-up of ministers and portfolios is after returning to run the affairs of the Federation after seven years having beat the contending parties of the broken-up Team Unity coalition.
As a people, we should be ever so conscious about playing a part in nation building but sadly it is almost as if patriotism and nation building is seasonal depending on which political party is in office. Now, this is just unfortunate and sad.
Your patriotism should not be determined by party politics. It goes without saying that the wrong-doings of a government in office would naturally of course propel one to stand up for integrity, good governance and all other applicable principles.
So, if it appears that resources are being mismanaged then by all rights all concerned citizens/residents have the right to make noise for better and change. What is concerning though is the noise just for making noise sake.
You know, like the willful stirring of issues just because of political indifferences? That is a big nono if you call yourself a son or daughter of the soil or whether you call St. Kitts-Nevis home in whatever capacity.
Whatever happened to our motto to create mischief. ‘Country Above Self’? Politics is all around us but at some point we have to observe and encourage rooting for the development and growth of our people and nation. In other words, we have to see where we can help.
And helping or contributing to one’s country does not mean holding a certain position in society or some other category which spaces socio-economic status. No! All of us can in our own way make our communities better thus collectively making our nation better.
Hosting afternoon classes with our young people, becoming a volunteer for a worthy cause, not littering, being a good neighbour are just some of the ways we can focus on uplifting our societies. But instead, a lot of the time too many people are tunnel focused on picking at the next juicy propaganda and spending time The radio airwaves are often kept buzzing with a constant series of criticism, week after week, and it is not the constructive kind in most cases.
Again, quite unfortunate and sad. Kudos to those of you who give advice for upliftment and advancement. What about bringing back the principles of having a village raise our child? The older generations reflect on those good ole days to the younger generations.
The Lenten Season is here , and just as a suggestion perhaps this can be an excellent opportunity to give up some mischievous behaviour aimed at tearing each other down at the altar of party politics. Let us pray for a more peaceful society built on togetherness for the betterment of us all.
