BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 12th May 2022) — The new candidate for Constituency Two (Central Basseterre) Marsha Henderson opened her campaign office along Central Street on Friday May 6, 2022 in a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Instead of the usual traditional passing of the baton, the immediate past candidate Marcella Liburd passed a pair of red heels to Henderson. The new candidate unboxed the shoes in front of the audience and put them on, giving an imagery of both the continued work to be done and a symbolism of feminine presence in the politics arena.

“Today, rather than taking the baton from the Honourable Marcella Liburd, I have taken from her a pair of red heels. I have come forward to serve you having been called by a number of persons to do so. It was not a desire of mine. I grew up in McKnight and Market Street with no such ambition. However, it became clear to me that the people of Central Basseterre needed a defender; someone to look out for them and help them find a better way and a new day,” Henderson said. She called for community togetherness to positively shape the lives of young men and children: “We are losing the fight in Central Basseterre with our young men in particular. Too many of them are ending up with no hope. Today I call on all mothers and fathers hearing the sound of my voice — let us begin to do more for our children. I pledge to be here for the people of Central Basseterre. You will find someone who will listen, someone who will understand, and someone who will act in your best interest. Together we will find a better way.”
