BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 26th May 2022) — “The health situation will be looked at from day one so that we can resolve it.” So said Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Dr. Terrance Drew while appearing on Freedom FM’s ‘Issues’ programme aired on Wednesday 25th May 2022. Dr. Drew, a medical doctor by profession specialised in internal medicine, said: “We have a serious health care issue.” He explained that health care will be looked at immediately should the SKNLP take office after the upcoming General Elections.
“There is no time to waste when it comes to that. We will make sure that our people are insured because the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party government, before the change in 2015, had a plan that was left on the desk and it was abandoned by the Unity concoction. Seven years later and there’s no advancement to cover the people when it comes to health insurance,” Dr. Drew said. He spoke about his party’s vision for “serious improvements when it comes to the delivery of health care and to give persons the opportunity to be trained, because they’re asking for training to make sure that the hospital is properly staffed on different levels, to make sure you can get a change of sheet at an appropriate time, get a change of pillow case.”
On his vision for healthcare delivery: “The health situation will be looked at from day one so that we can resolve it. It’s not about building a new hospital alone; it is about improving the quality of care and making sure that we have the staffing that is necessary so that people can be looked after. Where we cannot deal with it here in St. Kitts and Nevis, we will develop formal relations with institutions outside of St. Kitts and Nevis so that you don’t have to be running around. If we cannot deal with it, you are automatically transferred to an institution that can deal with it. That is how serious we are taking health care in St. Kitts and Nevis so that people should not die unnecessarily and especially the children.”
