National Address by Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition — 25 May 2021

Citizens and residents, I greet you today under the most unfortunate of circumstances. We are a resilient people, capable of rising above the greatest of challenges. Our Federation had been fortunate to be spared community spread for over a year — but the inevitable has now arrived, with some 16 new cases linked to an international traveller entering through the tourism sector. This is not the time to lay blame but rather to share the burdens of responding effectively to the crisis.

Dr. Douglas addressed several key areas: the education sector must be protected, with proper school closure plans and bridging of the digital divide for vulnerable students. Workers’ rights are at the fore — matters of paid leave, extended breaks from work due to mandatory quarantine must be well ventilated and employees fully supported. The physical, mental and social wellbeing of citizens — including the psychological toll of isolation on parents, children and families awaiting PCR results — requires genuine support. He noted the particular impact on women, globally and locally, who bear the heaviest fallout from COVID-19 lockdowns.

Douglas reaffirmed his support for vaccines: “Vaccinations work, and the COVID-19 emergency vaccinations can reduce the severity of illness and save lives. Each person must make an informed decision. Where government-led information is insufficient, consult your medical doctor, conduct your own research, and determine your next best step.” He called for management of COVID-19 to be Inclusive, Transparent, and Fair, and urged all to share information responsibly and work as a community to support students, teachers, and families in need.
