Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison criticised Cricket Australia for dropping references to Australia Day from promotional material for Big Bash League matches on the holiday, saying “you can’t just airbrush things that have happened in the past.” Cricket Australia said the decision was in recognition that 26 January is a “day of mourning” for many indigenous players. The date marks the anniversary of Britain’s First Fleet arriving in Sydney in 1788. For years, a “Change the Date” campaign led by indigenous Australians has lobbied to move the national day. A poll by Essential Research found that 29% of Australians planned to actively celebrate Australia Day in 2021, down from 40% in 2019.
