A Finals and a Season that everyone Loved – Almost

They are still talking about it in the offices, on the street corners, in the bars and every opportunity they get.

The 2017 finals of the St. Kitts Football Association (SKNFA) Premier Division – the Best of Three – is said to have been one of the most exciting, tense, energy sapping finals to watch, never mind the goal numbers. They don’t tell the whole story.

Two teams – FLOW 4G Cayon Rockets, defending champions and defending their pride, and Hobson Enterprises Garden Hotspurs showing talent but out in the wilderness for over a decade. Reaching the finals was a major achievement and they needed to make their mark and make a point to their fans as well as their non-supporters.

All of this background, anticipation and expectation showed on the field of play. From the first whistle blown by the referee, the tempo of the matches was set.

Intensely fast football, attack then defend, building plays down the flanks, up the middle and keeping those custodians busy.

The fans certainly more than got their money’s worth, as the saying goes, for in the packed stands and grounds, there was cheering for both teams, although Cayon supporters were louder. Then there was the advice from fans. If you can imagine it, they said it.

But while all that was going on, a less spoken about environment existed, because for young children, teenagers and adults, one couldn’t miss the aroma of hotdogs, pizza and fried chicken, or the peanut vendors who all made the football atmosphere just right.

Nevertheless, it was Cayon Rockets that stamped their authority on the first game, defeating Hotspurs 2-nil. Spurs had plans for a comeback in the second game, but it was not to be, and as the final whistle blew, they knew they went down with honor, because they fought a good fight – football speaking of course.

So with their pride in tact, Cayon went home in style by way of a victory motorcade.

But what did Coach George ‘Yellowman’ Isaac have to say about the team’s victory?

“Well, in the season, it was a little hard, because we played for all of the cups and never got one. But, one thing we always maintained was to stay focused and keep training right through the season. We kept saying, if we cannot get a cup, we must retain our championship,” Isaac explained.

Continuing, he said, “We went into the game with a positive mentality, a lot of confidence and making sure we did not give up early goals. We intended to stay firm, keep our shape and commit ourselves to the team and the fans.”

“We stuck to the plan and was successful.”

The responsibility of the shoulders of every team player might have been enormous.

On the other hand, Hotspurs Coach Alexis Richards is already looking toward 2018.

“All in all, it was a good season. There is disappointment being in several finals during the season and not being able to deliver here in the biggest final. We would have like to do better, but such is life,” he said.

Gov’t Under Fire For Scandalous Help In Crime Fight

By: Spokesman Newsroom

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts- Major General Stewart Saunders, a retired army chief and former Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of National Security in Jamaica accused of poor judgement in the May 2010 Tivoli Gardens, West Kingston operation has been hired by the Harris-led administration, drawing heavy criticism from the Opposition St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

Opposition leader, Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, the immediate former Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, addressed the matter while speaking on this week’s Party-sponsored Issues programme, aired on Wednesday 5th July on Freedom FM (106.5).

Dr. Douglas pointed out that if the findings of a Commission of Enquiry report have “labelled him (Saunders) unfit to ever hold an office in the police force in Jamaica, why is he being given a top position as the police officer and as the defense force officer here in St.Kitts and Nevis?”

“We have to be very careful about these things because people are sensitive to these things,” he noted.

He shared that contacts in Jamaica are questioning the government’s move to employ Saunders.

“People in Jamaica are calling and asking why he is being employed by the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security here in St. Kitts and Nevis. Has he been given proper reference? Has the Prime Minister not read the Commission of Enquiry Report? The Permanent Secretary, has he not read this particular report? Why is this happening?”

Dr. Douglas also questioned why Saunders was selected to be placed ahead of Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley and the Defence Force Commander Lt. Col. Patrick Wallace.

An article published by a top Jamaican media house, The Jamaica Gleaner, posted online at jamaica-gleaner.com, one year ago (Tuesday 5th July, 2016), gives some details about Saunders’ controversial background.

Headlined ‘Permanent Secretary for National Security to demit office’, in that particular article, it was disclosed that government insiders revealed that Major General Stewart Saunders was to demit office and that such development coincided with the release of the report of the West Kingston Commission of Enquiry which was critical of Saunders’ role in May 2010 operation.

As reported: “During the enquiry, Saunders had revealed that Jamaica requested overseas assistance for aerial surveillance. He also admitted that he authorised the use of the explosives and revealed that 37 mortar rounds were fired into three open spaces in the Tivoli Gardens area.”

Furthermore: “The army had initially denied that explosives were used in the operations, despite reports from residents that “bombs” were used in their community. Saunders and then JDF Mortar Control Officer, Major Warrenton Dixon, explained to the three-member tribunal that the explosives were intended to keep women and children indoors and prevent armed thugs from using them as human shields.”

According to that media house, “But this explanation did not sway Simmons and his fellow commissioners who called the decision to fire mortars into the west Kingston community a serious error of judgement.”

Reportedly, “the commission said given the fact that Tivoli Gardens is a heavily-populated community, the use of the explosives was reckless and wholly disproportionate to the threats presented by criminal gunmen.”

Information issued by the Prime Minister’s Officer last Wednesday (28th June), indicated that on that day Saunders was introduced to Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris as the National Security Advisor-designate for St. Kitts and Nevis during a brief meeting at Government Headquarters.

It was also highlighted that Saunders’ appointment was approved by the Federal Cabinet and that he was in the Federation that week finalising his contract and meeting with high ranking members of the security forces and other National Security stakeholders..

Early Childhood Official Talks Village Raising Children

By: Precious Mills

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– Acting Director of the Early Childhood Development Unit (ECDU), June Wallace, has shared her thoughts on a well-known saying which claims ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’

“I still feel that there is hope and that is what we are trying to do in our early childhood centres. That is why we are encouraging parenting and community involvement. For this child month celebration and for others, what we normally do is collaborate with the community so they’ll help us to advocate on behalf of children.”

Wallace, at the time, was responding to a question posed by this reporter during a chit-chat with other media workers at the Independence Square following the annual Child Month March held on Friday 30th June, observed under the month-long theme ‘For Every Child, Early Moments Matter’.

Scores of children from preschools and nursery centres and day care centres, from around the island participated in the yearly march accompanied by teachers and parents; many wearing this year’s blue themed t-shirt.

Some of the youngsters also wore career outfits such as police officer, nurse, doctor and dentist, fire fighter, teacher and construction worker.

They also carried placard sporting this year’s theme. ‘Expose Infants Early To the World Of Literacy’, ‘I Need You’ and ‘Read To Me’ were some of the other messages portrayed by the young ones.

Inclement weather experienced the day before with the passage of the tropical wave delayed an early morning start of the procession. As a result, it kicked off about close to 12 noon or just shortly after taking a shorter route.

In regard to the attendance for the march, Wallace said “The turnout was very good.”

Speaking more on the topic of community involvement in the upbringing of children, she continued: “We have persons who partner with us. We still believe when it comes to these very young ones, people of the Federation, they are concerned about young children, and we don’t want it to stay just here; we want them to do it all through their lives. For every child, early moment matters but we need to continue follow them through.”

As understood, members of the corporate community such as TDC and FLOW usually make contributions.

Asked to comment on this year’s Child Month theme, she said: “The theme, what it is promoting is early brain development and early stimulation and it also focuses on early nutrition and early nurturing of children.”

Touching on the importance of such she remarked:  “Early nurturing it means you want the best type of child you can have. If you have early nurturing, you will be able to prevent certain types of illness that could happen if you don’t have the early stimulation.”

This reporter also asked Wallace to highlight the operations of the Early Childhood Unit in St.Kitts-Nevis.

“Our early childhood Unit, we have our day care centres, we have nursery-both public and private and preschools and what we do is train and we advocate on behalf of children. We are advocates for the nation’s children. That is why is we will have this march annually. Every year, we have a different theme and the theme is encouraging teachers, parents and the community to stand with us in instilling certain values, basic things that we think are very important so that our children can grow up in the way that they should.”

“We hope that through this theme, the community, the nation would respect this theme for every child: early moment matters. We must all be ambitious for all children regardless of where they come from,” she added.

Wallace indicated that going forward, the route for the annual march might be remain shorter as used this year.

“We had a very successful month. As a matter of fact, the route was shorter this time and it was exciting and so I think we may change the long route that we normally have from Greenlands (and so) we may go from the (Warner) Park and come down.”

This year’s march kicked off from the Park on Victoria Road then took a right onto Cayon Street then left onto Church Street, left onto Liverpool Rowe turning onto Fort Street then to Cayon Street before going right along West Independence Square Street.

Other activities for 2017 Child Month included a sports day at Kim Collins Stadium and St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association Festival at Warner Park. The month- long celebration ended with a boat ride on Saturday 1st July.
